Help! If you have a PDA or pocket PC...

i have a few questions:

-which one do you have?

-how much memory does it have?

-what things do you love/hate about it?

-what are some great features?

- Do you HAVE to have an internet subscription plan for it (i wouldnt really need the internet part of it?)

- can you download program upgrades to your computer, and then upload them to your PDA?

- does it have a long battery life?

***most importantly... Does it have a voice recorder??

(and also- does it have a camera built into it? mainly b/c i Can't have a camera on it b/c of HIPAA)

I have a PDA.

I mostly used it during wedding planning and as my address book.

I have it hooked up to the computer. Last time I even turned the PDA on was when we moved into the house.

I have no idea which one it is or what it does. The only thing I do know what it does, is sit next to the computer and collect dust.

to the flip side of your question, what is the use of the pda? pda's come in all different flavors and sizes....

some do cameras while most don't

some have built in mini keyboards

pda (palm) and pocket pc are two different operation systems (pocket pc being more like windows xp and palm being more like a windows 3.1)

depending on how many apps you install (on board memory or external memory) you will have "X" amount of space. and with external drivers going all the way to 4 gigs, it will take a while to run out of space....

also, i noticed (though i havent done 'extensive' research yet).. that the memory isn't very high. I know you can get an additional memory card, etc... but i'd rather just have something that already has alot of memory built into it, if possible.

to find alot of internal memory is hard is costly. External drives are the key to these small devices....for exmaple, look at the dell page and you can just see the difference with memory on there models and you can see the huge price difference. You won't find gigs of memory space internally.

if you gonna be doing voice recordings...that will take up a big amout of space. im sure some do it.

(i was just looking at the dell axim's - i may get one soon to replace my sony) and it looks like pocket pc definatly supports voice recordings standard. With a PDA, you will probally need to buy an application to support that. only thing to make sure is that it has an onboard microphone.

i would recomend a pocket pc...it looks and feels like a pc... handwriteing (only tried it a few times) is more common to writeing reguarlly as to Palm (mine is older), you need to know your key strokes (if not using a keybaord). The new palm software i think updated writing text to refect more of a pocket pc writing.

the Axim is actually the one i'm looking at the most (and YEAH talk about a price difference! )

do all pocket pc's have keyboards? i'm not sure yet if i want one with a keyboard or not

as far as the pocket pc 'writing'- does it convert the handwriting into text? (meaning, would it convert it to say Times new roman in a word file.... as opposed to 'handwriting'?)

I have a tungsten e3 now...I used the C for clinical rotations and the wifi was a waste b/c it was too slow.

You don't need too much base memory - just an expansion slot.

Voice recorder was not necessary.

The alarm function saves my life on a regular basis...

I used:
5MCC
A to Z drugs (Drugs Rx is good)
Spanish-English and E-S dictionary
Medcalc
Some use netters if you rotate through surgery
Surgical recall for surgery

PS - I would pay attention to the width and weight of the PDA - the C was a bit heavy for me to lug around all day...after 12+ hours little things matter.

Word to go for the palm was handy b/c I was able to read documents during the day. I also had an adobe reader for PDFs.

I used to have one, but I never used it... I had a 90 day trial (this was about 2 years ago)... so I returned it... I found it very annoying to enter the stuff... I'm more of a hand-writer perosonally... BUT I keep thinking aobut getting another one... b/c it was helpful to downlload things from the PC to it.... I just always had hand written notes that I keep in my planner, that with the PDA, I did'nt have anywhere to keep them...
