Spinoff on vacations: How far in advance do you have to ask for vacation time?

Do you have to put it in writing?

Is there a system you have to follow, for example:

Are there periods where you can't take time off?

If is it seniority or first come first serve if your request is turned down?

Unless itis around our audit time, i can take off whenever i want

They like at least a weeks notice if it is more than a weeks vaca.

To take a day i can just tell them the day before if necessary

No advance notice needed - as long as there is coverage.

I don't think we really need to give much advanced notice - though I'm sure if it's more then a day or 2 they would like at least a week. Except during tax season when NO days off are allowed. I LOATHE tax season.Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff on vacations: How far in advance do you have to ask for vacation time?

We have to put it in writing, and have it approved not ONLY by our immediate bosses (in my case, the 4 attorneys I assist ) but any request for vacation time ALSO needs to be initialized by my immediate co-workers... for coverage purposes... They initializing it means they have no intention of taking the same days off.. (this causes problems, of course, when you and your co-workers want the same days off Chat Icon)

THEN after this entire scenario, the request has to be approved by my department supervisor Chat Icon

Usually a week's notice is required for extended vacation time.. random days here or there, they tend to be more flexible (again as LONG as they have coverage!)

Certain times of year, you have to request your time off MONTHS in advance ... (summer/holidays/etc)

I hate this place Chat Icon

Normally, my boss really doesn't care how far in advance I put the request in for, but I like to give him at least a months notice.

It's looked bad upon to take time off during our pledge and fundraising times...which seem to be like every month! Chat Icon

About 1 weeks notice and yes it has to be in writing. Even if you discuss it verbally first they want you to fill out the form.

For Christmas time and long summer vacations they PREFER them in a little earlier (like a month in advance) but they really can't say no if you wait too long.

It goes by seniority.

That is annoying!!!!!

I can basically take it whenever I want since there is no coverage for me. The job just doesnt get done until I am back. You should have seen my desk after my HM.Chat Icon

I just have to give them a "reasonable time". If I am not here, there is no attorney in the office. Since my week long vacations are usually planned, (my honeymoon and out of state trips) I let them know when everything is booked. I have never had a problem. I just need to let the office manager, my boss - the partner and my secretary know.

We have "Request Forms". My company likes 2 weeks notice. I am going away in March, and as a courtesy I already put in for it. My boss knows she will need someone to help run my room and I know I can book my flight because it was approved today!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
