The city has different refrigeration laws so the milk doesn't last as long.

ohhhh LOL I always thought NYC had a shorter shelf life date because they deliver the milk outside early in the am before the stores open

I always go by the NYC expiration date because I only like really fresh milk.

I always thought one was the Sell By date and one was the Use By date....
eta...somehow missed the LI and NYC bit of the OP.
