The do's and Dont's of Pregnancy!

I dont know if Im in the norm or this makes my doc not a good doc but he told me, everything in moderation and didnt exactly tell me to stay away from anything except raw fish, alcohol and smoking ( which of course I dont do)

Other than that, he said...just like anything, dont overdo it and in moderation.

So, what did your doc tell you was ok and not ok?

ETA: I have a psycho, overdramatic SIL who attacked me yesterday when I mentioned a CLAM bake i was going to and whether I can eat it!!

My doc said to avoid raw fish, shell fish and unpastuerized (sp) cheeses, that is it. He seemed very laid back though Chat Icon

My doc also said no raw fish, and don't eat a lot of the 4 fish that are high in mercury...tuna, macaral, shark, and I always forget the other one.

He was very adamant, though, about watching with the sugar.

Obviously every doc is going to say avoid raw meats, however same here everything as long as it's on moderation. I agree with this philosophy after going through my first pregnancy and being so good, I've come to realize you eat what yiou can when you can and in moderation.

Re: The do's and Dont's of Pregnancy!

My Dr. cautioned against raw fish and unpastuerized cheeses. She wasn't crazy about me eating coldcuts or hot dogs, but said that as long as the meats were from a reputable place and the dogs were cooked all the way through, then it would be fine in moderation.
Some Dr.s are just more cautious then others. I personally don't drive myself batty with what I can or can't eat. Aside from raw fish and feta cheese (which I'm not crazy about to begin with) I eat whatever I want.

My doctor is very laid back as well. She pretty much said not to oo drinking and smoking (not like I would do it anyway) cautioned against raw fish, unpasturized cheeses, fish high in mercury, but that was about it. She even said I could have coffee everyday, only 8 oz,but I don't. She is of the moderation philosophy.

Re: The do's and Dont's of Pregnancy!

My doctor is the same way - extremely laid back about the food issues. She didn't tell me anyting was 'off limits' except for sushi/raw fish, alcohol and smoking.. said to be careful with the cold cuts and soft cheeses but wasn't adamant about not having them... Everything else she told me was ok in moderation Chat Icon

My doctor is very lax on this as well. He told me 4 types of fishes i should not eat (i never ate them before so no big deal), raw fish and tuna fish. THat was it. Everything else in moderation.

Midway through my pregnancy he even told me if i wanted a glass of wine here and there that would be okay too. But just one and not a massive glass either.

ETA - Other friends of mine have had long lists of what they can eat and not eat. Every doctor is different.

Don't lift anything over 20 lbs.
Take your prenatals
Drink LOTs of water
Don't eat unpasteurized cheeses such as mozzarella and feta
No diet sodas (asperteme and the caffeine too)
Limit your caffeine intake
If you have coldcuts heat them in them microwave or toaster oven first
No raw fish

Of course you have to do what you feel is right. I've heard foot massages when you get pedicures can put you into labor. There was probably one case of that ever but it still scares me so I just have them go easy. Again its up to you to what extent you follow all these dos and don'ts. Chat Icon

.

#4 (unfortunetly my fav) Sword Fish.

I eat everything in moderation, this is baby #2 so the dr. really didn't say anything to me but "you know the drill".

I will say that I craved prosciutto day & night with my son, ate it without even thinking its uncooked meat & he was born just fine.

Don't sweat it..enjoy your 40 weeks,most problems don't arise from food,rather- genetics.

My doc said NO cold cuts, hot dogs, sushi, she talked about fish but I don't really eat fish so I don't remember what she said. She's fairly young so I think she wants to err on the side of caution, which I understand.

Of course, I still don't know what my alternative to sandwiches will be when I go back to work this week! Chat Icon
