Looking for answers to medical question- Specifically Nursing
Anyone know how to go about getting a nurse for your house? I mean, the person comes in and out of your house when you are at your worse, how do you know if they are trustworthy? Do you ask your insurance company and just go with whoever they will pay for? Just go to the hospital and ask around? I need help. I am looking for one nurse for me and one nurse for my son Joseph.
PS Reminder- I am not on Long Island.

first of all
I would ask at the hospital or doctors offices who they could reccomend for home healthcare workers. we got some for round the clock home care when my dad needed it.we had excellent nurses.

Re: Looking for answers to medical question- Specifically Nursing
I am not sure exactly what to do, but maybe your doctors will have a recommendation for you.
I know you said that you became close with one of Joseph's nurses in the hospital, maybe give her a call and see if she has a recommendation.
Sorry I couldn't be of better help. I have a couple of inlaws down in FL, I will ask them if they know of anyone, especially that they trusted.
We had a very close family friend that was very sick and had someone come in everyday and another that lived with them, so I will have my IL ask her about them.

i *think* most hospitals have Home Healthcare RNs. i know we do... you may be able to find out about it on their web site, or your doctor could give you referrals for places- but i think going through one thats associated with the hospital is the best bet.

Re: Looking for answers to medical question- Specifically Nursing
My mother is a home healthcare director here on Long Island. If you call a home healthcare agency at a local hospital they should be able to help you and give you information about insurance and what you are entitled to. Let me know if you have any specific questions and I can get answers from her.
Best of luck, as always you are in my prayers.

Re: Looking for answers to medical question- Specifically Nursing
DebG, i work in a NICU here on long island and there are always moms looking for nursing care. they usually call the unit and have it posted in our breakroom the hours they are looking for. As for reimbursement you have to go thru medicaid as far as i know. for yourself you can arrange nursing care thru a homecare agency and an agent can set you up with the paperwork. Good luck, wish you were near so i could help you out with Joey. Hope you are feeling better.

Re: Looking for answers to medical question- Specifically Nursing
I have a few friends who have been Home Health Aids. Some are LPN's some are even RN's. You would call an agency which you would probab;y get recommended through the hospital Social Worker or something.
As for trustworty? Well....if this is through an agency I am sure there are background checks & whatnot. People who do this kind of job are special people! I've only encoutered good people who do that kind of work!!
Best of luck!

I agree, going through an agency should help with the trustworthiness.
I don't know what part of FL you are in, but this may help. It at least has a lot of information about home health care & what to look for.
Visiting Nurse Association of Florida
Here is another link that may help.

Re: Looking for answers to medical question- Specifically Nursing
Ususally when people call us ( work) for recomendations, we suggest going through the local hospital because they do the best background checks on anyone they use, you can usually find someone good through them.
Im sure the NICU nurses can help with reccomendations for Joey.
Plus all the great suggestions and help already from all the ladies here.
