here's my opinion... was it right for him to say it? probably not. especially considering the extremely violent global scale protests over the Mohammed cartoons.
but IMO, the reaction in the West Bank and Gaza kinda validates what he said.

You said pretty much exactly what I was thinking.

I don't think it validates it at all. I think it's a horrible situation and i think he was totally wrong to say it. I didn't read the entire transcript of the event, but the newsppaer said that he didn't make any commentary on what he quoted whehter he agreed with him or not. So a reasonable person would assume he agreed with the quotation he was citing.
It's a dangerous thing in many ways to try to say that Islam only brings hatred and war, etc. it's simply not true, and he should have the judgement to know not to say that, especially since he represents all catholics on the world stage.
I'm angered and ashamed by the comments

I agree. it sort of annoys me too b/c the Muslims that protest say how mad they are that the "West" sees Islam as a religion of violence- but they they wish death on us... sort of contridicts their whole message AND religion.
Was the Pope right? No- I read the transcript- and I really have no idea what he was trying to even convey.

he should have chosen his words more carefully - but for Islam followers to murder a nun and set fires to churches over it -that is not justifiable!

I think he was just trying to spread a message of peace saying that for Muslims spreading their religion by way of the sword is not the way to go. So what do they do? Some fanatics go out and kill a nun! They are just digging themselves deeper and deeper. It's a shame that an entire religion has gotten such a bad name because of the fanatics committing these crimes.
