For those with PCOS...TMI warning
I went to a new gynocologist today. While we were talking in her office, I told her about my dad having Type 2 diabetes, and how I have been on the pill since 19 b/c of irregular period. She then tells me about the link between Type 2 diabetes and irregular periods and PCOS, and starts telling me that I am more likely to have trouble conceiving and am at higher risk for miscarriages. I asked her, "are you saying that I have PCOS?" She very off-handedly says something like "yes, most likely." I asked her if there was anything else I should be doing, and she said no..i'm already on the pill, not overweight, no excessive hair growth, etc... She was very casual about it, like it was no big deal.
So, my question for you girls with PCOS is: How were you diagnosed? What symptoms did you have? What should I be doing? I'm floored right now, and I'm not sure whether to believe that I have it or not.

Re: For those with PCOS...TMI warning
after suffering from Infertility I was getting tested by my new RE and thats how I got diagnosed. If you are worried about it, you can ask for blood tests to find out.

i'm going to call her tomorrow and ask about blood tests. It just bothered me that she said it so off-handedly, like it was no big deal. I'd rather know for sure one way or another.

I don't know too much about but definately get a blood test or 2nd opinion. My sil has this...irregular periods, unable to conceive the last couple of years. She just had IVF and is finally pregnant . Her mom is also diabetic. try not to worry yourself too much

I would defintely get a 2nd opinion. I never got my period and it was confirmed through a blood test.

My doctor didn't seem to concern either. Which is bothersome because everyone on the board is on meds. Unless, of course she didn't want to address it until after my myomectomy?? Still doesn't make sense. I am most likely switching RE.

Actually this is similiar to how I was diagnosed. It was kinda off-handed. She didn't seem over concerned, but prescribed metphormin. This would allow my body to ovulate on its own. I started taking it while I was on the pill so when I went off I would be able to ovulate.

Re: For those with PCOS...TMI warning
I have PCOS - This is a great site for information: www.soulcysters.com Some people gave it to me - I have had problems with cysts -
I will tell you - yes it can make you more likely to end up with other problems but it doesn't mean that you WILL.
BTW yes it can make it harder with pregnancy- the miscarriage deal is that many have insulin resistance and don't know it -
BUT I know a number of people who got pregnant without RE help, and had healthy full term babies.
It is not something that I would be scared of having - but maybe something to just be aware of.

Definitely get a second opinion. It seems that diagnosing women with PCOS has become the "diagnosis de jour". I have a specialist that I can recommend to you for a second opinion. A friend was misdiagnosed with PCOS and went to this doctor for a second opinion.

Re: For those with PCOS...TMI warning
I was diagnosed by blood work and a sonogram. My gyn had suspected that this is what I had and sent me to an endocronologist for the testing. Sure enough I had a pretty severe case of it. my symptoms were no periods for months, trouble with weight, and a small amount of excess hair
But, to maybe help you feel better. I did need some medication to help me get pregnant. I was given metformin. I got pregnant after 3 months on the medication. Now, after being pregnant I had to go for another sonogram to see if it was coming back at all. The PCOS is totally gone!! My gyn said most of the times the "cure" for the PCOS is pregnancy because of the surge of hormones, and usually it does not return.

What did it turn out that she did have, if anything? I suspect I may have this too, but I had a similar experience when I was younger & missing periods & told it was no big deal. I could go on the pill if I wanted, but not too worry.

I don't know much about it, but I HATE when doctors treat medical concerns so casually. I would get a second opinion just because of her cavallier attitude.

I believe it is just an underactive thyroid that she has and is being treated for.
