question about baby's first words
do they learn from drilling like saying ma ma, ma ma, or just from casual conversation like mama's here, come to mama?

In the beginning when they're learning to imitate sounds ma, ma, ma is how you get them to repeat it.
Later pointing to things "Ball! See the ball?" will get them to attach a name to an object.

so they can say ma, ma and not even have it associated with me yes?
