Does anyone use 'safer' cleaning products?

If so, what do you use? And are they as effective?

growing up I remember my mom always using Basic H which was a cleaning product by Shaklee. I think it worked as well as the tradional products. It was expensive, you used a lot less of and it wasnt harmful to the enviroment.

Re: Does anyone use 'safer' cleaning products?

I try to avoid a lot of chemicals.

I use a steamer to clean about 70% of the house. Its just water and you would be amazed at how well it cleans just about everything. the pressure wipes away anything and the water is obviously SO hot it kills the germs.

I know I may be a nut job, but I wanted to start getting away from the harsh cleaners before we have kids and stuff, some of that stuff lingers in the air, you dont wash it off properly etc...and it worries me

eta- I use the MR Clean Magic eraser a lot to clean up and if I buy something, I usually use the METHOD brand of products. I read somewhere a while ago it had the least amount of harsh chemicals in it.

I'm interested in this too, I'd like to hear how effective you find them.

All I can think of is ground water and soil. Like when cleaning the toilet, I think gosh these chemicals are ending up right into the ground Chat Icon it all comes full circle.....

This is the steam cleaner I have. It was relatively inexpensive. And I use it for the entire bathroom, the tub/shoer, the toilet bowl etc...and I swear it works just as good as any other "cleaner" out there.

Re: Does anyone use 'safer' cleaning products?

Is it washable? Does it even get dirty?

You just put water in it?

I'm a big bleach fan. But I know it's so bad.
I just don't feel like things are really clean without it.

Re: Does anyone use 'safer' cleaning products?

You put plain water in it. You plug it in and it heats up sooooo hot that the water turns to steam. You press it on a spot and the steam literally melts away everything, grime, dirt etc. And you simply wipe it away. It works wonders in my tub/shoer.

All the attachments are washable. Some have cloth on them you can remove and throw in the wash.

I clean almost every thing with vinegar...I dilute it with water, and wash the floors, clean the windows and all the glass, the shower doors (it's awesome on that shower door build up).....it kills germs, and it's perfectly safe...for stainless steel stuff (my sink), I use a 3-1 ratio of cream of tartar and lemon juice-it makes it sooo shiny, and if I do get a rust spot, I use peroxide instead of lemon juice with the cream of tartar-I have a year old labrador, that licks everything...so, the vinegar works best for me

ETA: white vinegar--

My mom SWEARS by vinegar.....now, my cleaning girl, who INSISTS on using paper towels for everything (Chat Icon ), Mr. Clean ORANGE (NOT lemon or any other scent!!), scrubbing bubbles in the spray can.... it is going to be hard to get her to switch to vonegar and newspaper. Even tho she says that's what they use in "her country" I guess she wants to use all the name-brand stuff here.

I am going to try to get her to use vinegar and newspaper, thanks for posting this and making me realize that my mom isn't the only one touting vinegar!

yep, works like a charm....

I can't stand when I get in a shower at a hotel, and I smell the cleaning products, I feel like I'm standing in chemicals....I guess it's because I'm used to the vinegar, it's what my mom used to use

It's Euro-Pro

My mom got it from HSN Cause they have them buy one get one free.

I have seen it though in Target and Linens and things and Fortuneoffs. They have a bigger model as well, but in an apt. we dont need the big one.

One more question about using vinegar, is it a 1 to 1 ratio with water?

We use Simply Green. It works really well, even on pet stains, etc.

My MIL does her entire house. Now, since I have granite counter tops and can't use ammonia I've switched to vinegar as well. You can buy a 1 gallon bottle of it at Costco and it will last forever. Better for the environment and the wallet... it's a lot cheaper than all of the pre-packaged chemicals.
