Spinoff to Spinoff - Would you allow a separate phone line in your children's bedroom?

Don't know if this was asked before -

But here goes -

Would you allow your child to get their own phone line in his/her bedroom?

I absolutely wouldn't. I don't care what age they are - I would feel it would just be another distraction for them - its enough that almost everyone now has beepers/cell phones - but separate phone lines and that extra expense is not necessary.

What do you think?

Re: Spinoff to Spinoff - Would you allow a separate phone line in your children's bedroom?

Well, I always had a phone in my room, but not a separate line. I wouldn't pay for an additional number, especially if they have a cell. But I probably wouldn't get a cell until 16 or 17 for them, possibly later.

When I had a phone in my room I didn't talk on it any more than when I didn't--it just meant I wasn't hiding in the bathroom with the other phone (oh the days before cordless phones!).

like you said, kids nowadays already have cell phones and all those other gadgets. I will only give my daughter this stuff when she is 16 or older but she would have to get a small job so that she can earn it.

I don't think having a separate phone line in a child's room is relevant to today's world....but some kids have cell phones, which I don't understand. I told my step-daughter (who's 9) that she can get a cell phone, when she gets a job and can pay for it. Before then...I don't see a need for it.

If they already have a cell phone then no. If not, maybe when they start high school.

No. I don't think there is any need. There are cordless phones, if the NEED privacy...they can go in their room with the cordless.

Re: Spinoff to Spinoff - Would you allow a separate phone line in your children's bedroom?

From 12 on, I always had a phone in my bedroom with a separate line. And I was a straight A student until I graduated high school. I think that if you have a kid who gets distracted easily, then the phone will distract them, and if you have a kid who's focused, then it won't distract them.
All these hypothetical questions are great, but to answer them in a general way when you don't have kids is hard because the answers would almost always depend on the kind of child you have. JMO.

I think I was 16 or so when I got my own line. I'm not sure how I feel about it for my future kids.

I am not sure although I got my telephone line at 16. I would have to wait and see how I feel when we have children.

I got my own line when I was 17. I paid for it myself. I also didn't have a cell phone until I was 21.

I think when he can use the cordless phone for privacy. Cell phone...when he can pay for it himself.

I had one when I was 13. But I shared the room with my 23 year old sister!!

But we had to pay for it ourselves and had a no long distance rule.

Yes, let me add that even at 12, my sister, who was 14, we had to pay the bill for our own line with our babysitting money. If anything, that phone line taught me responsibility.

Same for me. I can tell you I have had my own cell phone since I was 15 or 16 ( again my own money that I earned at a job!) and I have NEVER EVER ONCE in my life gone over my cell phone minutes!!! Chat Icon
Having that first pre-paid cell phone really taught me to be resonsible.

My 15 year old neice on the other hand goes over her minutes every month and last month stuck my sister with a $350 cell phone bill!!
( and she dosen't even have a job! Chat Icon )

Re: Spinoff to Spinoff - Would you allow a separate phone line in your children's bedroom?

My Dad worked for the phone company and I didn't get an EXTENSION, never mind my own phone line until I was 24!!!

And I had to walk uphill, both ways in the snowChat Icon

Seriously, years later when I asked my Dad why not he said "Because as your parent it is my responsibility to monitor who is contacting you so you will share the phone line. You do not NEED a phone."

He was 100% right. It wasn't a matter of money (it would have been very cheap) it was a matter of parental responsibility.

So many of my student's parents have no idea who their teenagers are talking to and they would be shocked to find out.

Re: Spinoff to Spinoff - Would you allow a separate phone line in your children's bedroom?

Most likely they will have a cellphone (if they can afford it)... so an extra landline is not necessary.

Hell... i won't even have a landline unless I am getting for free (through wifey's job).

Re: Spinoff to Spinoff - Would you allow a separate phone line in your children's bedroom?

I had one, but that was before cellphones and it was primarily because I was alwyas online tying up the phone,a nd then when i was teenager I was always on the phone tying up the phone, so it worked out. It was the modem/fax line in addition to being my personal line. I don't feel strongly either way. If a need arises, my kid will have a separate phone line, if not, they won;t.

Re: Spinoff to Spinoff - Would you allow a separate phone line in your children's bedroom?

I think sharing a phone with 5 other people in the house taught us a lot about being considerate and not being a phone hog. I think that skill did transfer to other areas of my life as well. I also agree with the idea of parents knowing who is calling the house and why.
