Stomach virus...what's normal?
OK, so the traveling stomach virus came to visit our house...yay!! Katherine was throwing up all afternoon and evening on Thursday. I called my pediatrician and I asked should I expect this to be over by tomorrow (thinking normal adult 24 hr. thing), and he said no way, about 3-4 days.
Well, the vomiting stopped that night, but the diarrhea has continued on, even until as recently as 30 minutes ago; this is day five now. We're going through onesies like there's no tomorrow! I got her back on solids yesterday with bananas and rice, but so far the "binding" action hasn't worked. She seems a lot better otherwise.
Please help...is this normal and if so, when will it STOP??? I can't do one more load of laundry!!

Re: Stomach virus...what's normal?
I don't know what's normal or not, but Michael had diarreah on and off for a MONTH! When I first brought him in, his ped. said 7-10 days, BUT Michael is still suffering right now with this and I just got off the phone with his ped. and he said it is common that this can linger on with babies for months! Believe me I know how you feel! Stick with the BRAT diet and you should see a difference. Unfortunatly for Michael he started having lactose issues which is also common... Personally, if it doesn't stop in a day or two, I'd call again and they may want to see her for a weight check. Michael has to go for another one tomorrow!
I hope she feels better soon and doesn't end up like my son!

Re: Stomach virus...what's normal?
Jacob has the stomach virus about a month and a half ago. It felt like it never was going to end.
He had throwing up for about 3 days and he ended up having the diarrhea for about 10 days...
after that he was finally back to himself...
At least I will be better prepared if and when it happens again..
unoftinately during this I ended up getting the bug for about 2 days also
Just keep doing what you are doing. Unfortunately there is nothing else you could do.

Re: Stomach virus...what's normal?
Rebecca came down with it last Wed. Today is the first day she seems a little better. We were hyrdrating her via syringe as she refused to drink anything except milk which we couldn't give her! She is still refusing to drink from her sippy cup but she now is eating light food. Ugh. I dred sending her back to daycare as I have a 7 week old who I am afraid may get it next.

Re: Stomach virus...what's normal?
We just got over it- 7 days of diarrhea- to the point that she cleared the waiting room at the doctor's office with one accident
It was hell! All I can tell you is day 6 1/2 she started getting better and by day 7 she was completely back to normal other than not sleeping
Good luck

Miranda has this. She only threw up one day, but it is day 6 and she STILL has diarrhea. Last year she had the same virus and it took more than a week to go away.

Andrew got sick with vomiting on Friday night -- diarrhea and vomiting on Saturday, runny nose, and fever plus diarrhea through Sunday night. He still has a low-grade fever and refuses to eat today.

Re: Stomach virus...what's normal?
My Kevin had this, too. Our poor babies. It started last Monday w/ a slight fever then Tuesday until yesterday he had diarrhea like there was no tomorrow! He threw up for about 3 days.
We gave him Pedialyte and then started the BRA (no T) diet... and that seemed to help. Today is the first day in over a week where I feel like I have my baby back!
Hang in there!

Re: Stomach virus...what's normal?
Aww poor baby! My niece just got over a week of this. Vomitting, diarrhea and fever. She was in the hospital for 4 days on IV to be sure she didn't dehydrate. They changed her formula to a soy one because apparently the virus makes you lactose intolerant. She's doing great now but it was a rough 7+ days!

Re: Stomach virus...what's normal?
Bananas Rice Applesauce Toast
High fiber to bulk it up!
As for the stomach virus - Michael went to the doctor AGAIN today because he has been battling diarreah for over a month! Which according to Michael's ped. is normal in toddlers. The virus does something to their belly's and can cause lactose intolerance or something called toddler tummy - Michael has both So if you are concerned that it's too much diarreah, definitely speak with your ped. but know that it is common that poopy's can linger much longer in babies than it does in adults.

Re: Stomach virus...what's normal?
Thanks, ladies; at least I know it's normal now.
After going through about 4 dirty diapers in the last 3 hours, plus a run to BRU for more diapers, wipes, Balmex, bananas and rice, I've HAD IT! I think I'm going to give the doctor a call tomorrow to be on the safe side since she isn't eating as much as usual. Thanks once again!!
