Interviews for College Scholarships

My sister just received a letter that next month she has an interview since she is a finalist for a scholarship. It's at UNC Asheville. I never had to interview, neither did my other sisters, does anyone know what questions will be asked? Any experience at all?

I want to role play so she doesn't miss a beat. So much is riding on this, her little 17 year old head is spinningChat Icon

TIA

Re: Interviews for College Scholarships

I believe this is pretty common, especially when there are scholarships at hand. I wish I could help, just wanted to send some luck her way!

Re: Interviews for College Scholarships

I assume they will ask her things similar to a job interview. She should research the school and faculty in her major. have some answers prepared on goals, learning and study style etc. She should have some stuff to talk about that she's proud of or made a difference in community service or volunteering. If its a sports scholarship maybe some stuff on what the sport has taught her about life. You could probably google or ask jeeves and get some answers too

Re: Interviews for College Scholarships

thanks.. I am also wondering in Barnes and Nobles will have something on it as well. Its an acedemic scholarship, she is totally rounded though..soccer all 4 years, fundraisers and coat drives. She's valedictorian and student pres. The kid has worked so hard for a scholarship, my stomach is in knots. She is number 6 of 7, so my parents are pretty tapped out on loans as it is.

Re: Interviews for College Scholarships

She should be prepared to answer questions about why she wants to go there, what kind of activities will she join, why did she pick her major, what is she planning on doing in the future, lets see...what's the last book she read, favorite movie, fav tv show/movie, if she had to write an essay when she applied - she may be asked about her essay, most meaningful activity she's participated in high school, who would she like to meet in life.

I think collegeboard.com has sample interview questions - or try princeton review.

Honestly, I don't. JMO, but I feel that a lot of college administrators look down on the Greek system. If she mentions it with other activities, I think it's ok, but don't dwell on it and act all "gung ho" about it. She should make it more like she's going to keep an open mind and see all that college has to offer.

Re: Interviews for College Scholarships

Also - sororities usually are quite expensive in terms of dues. She doesn't want them to think that this is what she is going to use scholarship money for, or even worse, let them think that if she has the money to join a sorority - she doesn't need theirs!!! Sad, but true!

Re: Interviews for College Scholarships

good thinking-it is incredible how much is riding on this. I am curious to know the number of people received letters, but my sister said that would be too pushy to ask.

Chat Icon I know it is driving me crazyChat Icon They are really friendly though, I guess not too many are from out of state..when she called to RSVP they said she can stay in the dorms an extra night if that helps flight schedules and they would pick her up from the airport.

Re: Interviews for College Scholarships

Three of my high school friends were Morehead scholars at UNC Chapel Hill. I think the interview process was more of a getting to know you type thing. They loved UNC Chapel Hill--best of luck to your sister!

Re: Interviews for College Scholarships-update, THANKS

thanks so much to Michal, Novbride, melijane and rachel for the info and taking the time to help. I took questions from the web and grilled my sister, took all your pointers, and she got the scholarship!

I was clueless as to what they wanted, thanks again!!!
