Re: Dumb ?, Yoga or Pilates?
i actually just did a pilates tape for the first time...
it was tough! I thought my head was going to fall off my neck... my friend has been doing the same program for a few months now, and said it takes a while, but she can really feel a difference with her flexability/strength (she was already in good shape).
i'll let you know how i feel in the am

Re: Dumb ?, Yoga or Pilates?
Pilates was developed by a man named Joseph Pilates - the technique is based in the strengthening and elongating of the body from your core. So there's a lot of focus on strengthening your stomach muscles as, according to Pilates, they affect everything else.
I really like Pilates - it's very close to ballet in a sense. Lots of stretching and focus on posture in order to build long lean muscle.
FM me if you want any more details. I don't really know much about yoga, I haven't been able to get in to it much.

Re: Dumb ?, Yoga or Pilates?
I do pilates, which I love for tightening muscles...but I always combine it w/ at least 30 minutes of cardio.
As for yoga, I do Vinyasa yoga, which is like power yoga (constant flow) every week and I love it. It has made my entire body (esp. upper) so much stronger. Plus, it's super relaxing. My teacher dims the lights, puts on incense...it's great!

I think it's pretty hard to find machine based pilates classes - I know there's a center here in London, but it's mostly filled with dancers - people who are really advanced and have been doing it for years. I just found this on the internet:
Mat-based versus machine Pilates This has nothing to do with comparing yoga with Pilates but I want to add a comparison between mat-based and machine-based Pilates because people also ask about it. If Pilates is the only form of muscle toning that you do, then a combination of both would be ideal because Pilates machines offers more resistance and types of exercise for the arms and legs (especially the upper body) than mat-based classes. Meanwhile, abdominal exercises in mat Pilates are usually harder than machine Pilates because the machine supports the legs during exercises that involve leg raises. By mixing mat and machine Pilates, you get a more total muscle-strengthening program. If you do weights or yoga, mat Pilates will be sufficient and you won't need to add Pilates machine exercises.
And here's a link to the article which discusses the differences between Yoga and Pilates in depth:
Yoga vs. Pilates

Re: Dumb ?, Yoga or Pilates?
NYSC does Pilates Reformer-machines! It is an extra charge over your membership-but I know the instructor she will let you take a couple of classes for free.It is GREAT! I did it for 6 weeks before my wedding and it literally changed my body
