OK who is a genius and has a great idea for me?

My coworkers rent and are leaving for vacation tomorrow.

The landlord asked the upstairs tenants to do work in the back yard, and back of the house (pointing on the brick).

The houses on her street are all attached (they live in queens).

OK so now for the dilemma. The upstairs tenant asked to leave him the key to the basement so he can get through into the yard to do the work, but they are afraid him and his wife are going to use their washer & dryer while they are away.
Their is nothing in the basement of value, and they do trust their neighbors, BUT they don't want their washer & dryer used.

Can you disable a dryer in anyway so it is impossible for them to use it?

I told my friend there is no better place to get an answer than on LIF! Chat Icon

I think you can shut off the water valve to the washer.

I guess just unplug it AND unplug the tubes--make it a PITA to fix, and maybe they won't bother!

I would shut off the water valve I know we had to shut off two of ours when we went on the cruise one in the basement and there was another one somewhere else, also They should shut off there oil burner that gives off Hot heat and shut the water system down so they cant use anything. and pull out the vent part in the back off the dryer.

Tell the neighbors that it started to smell like burning last night and they will have to call someone in to fix it - but it won't get fixed until they get back. Maybe it will deter them from trying....

The tubes leading to the water--I just had to replace one for my mom--there are two--one for hot water and one for cold. There also must be some kind of exhaust for the dryer?

I think this is the best plan that "could" work. I think if you start disabling pieces of the washer/ dryer and they attempt to use it or screw around with it...theres gonna be bigger problems.

I think they have no choice but to tell them they would prefer they didn't use the washer and dryer.

You can unplug it but they can always plug it in. I wouldn't mess with anything more than that.

Also, what would be so bad if they used it? Are they afraid they would break it?

If they are worried about that they should pile stuff on top of it to make it look like it's off limits. If they didn use it when they came home they would see stuff had been moved.

their dryer is electric and they don't want the extra cost of their electric bill since they do laundry once a week or so and it is alot!

I can see how this would be a problem but playing around trying to disconnect it and them trying to re-wire it in the end is going to cost more. Maybe the poster aboce is right tell them to be honest...no is no.
