Questions re: uploading photos

I'm completely clueless when it comes to uploading photos. I finally decided to try to make photo books/photo albums of our wedding pics. I used the pics sent to me by friends and family. Almost all of them were upoladed to kodak photo gallery. I took the pics I like from everyone's albums and created a new album. I also saved the pics in a folder on my computer and then uploaded them to other photo sites (from my saved folder). When I tried to make photo albums, the quality wasn't great. When I tried to add pics to a photo book in shutterfly, it said the quality (resolution) was poor and that wallet size was the maximum size the pics should be printed. I also had picture quality issues when making a photo book with kodak. Did I do something wrong? Why would the resolution be poor when most of the pics came from digital cameras? I'd greatly appreciate any info you have. TIA.

Quick lesson in resolution. It's not exactly what resolution is, but it's so you get the idea.

You take a photo with your digital camera using the highest setting for resolution/file size on your computer (usually it's saved as a jpg unless you've changed a setting on your camera). You upload this image (or send the file) to a website (in your case kodakgallery).

The website then shows you the image that you took. When they show you the image, it is not the original file you sent. It has a lower resolution (otherwise the website would take ages to load). When you save these files on your computer or to another photo album they are low resolution files. Think of it as a picture being copied & then using the copy to make a copy, etc. The image eventually loses its quality.

When you loaded your pictures to an album, you "took the photos from everyone's album, the image you took was a copy of a copy - NOT the original file.

If you want sharp pictures, you need to ask them to load their original file to a folder or to email them to you.

HTH

Thank you so much. I hoped you'd see this since I consider you the resident camera/photo expert. Chat Icon I figured it had something to do with me copying the photos into another folder.

By the way, in case you never saw a "shout out" I made to you several weeks ago, thanks again for the advice re: B&H photo. I got a Canon SD600 from there and I love it. I got great pics of our trip to Maine.
