Spinoff to putting babies down for nap BTDT moms: How old were your babies when
You started putting them down for naps in the crib and letting them whine themselves to sleep? DD is 11 weeks and she has started taking some fairly regular naps but I'm afraid of the crib and cry/whine. I'm still putting her in the swing for naps, but I feel like I should try the crib. She uses the crib at night but we haven't begun trying to get her to put herself to sleep yet. I'm just wondering at what age you all started to try to get them to soothe themselves to sleep?

11 weeks seems young to me. I did it at 4.5 months and to be honest I think that was a bit young too -- I was at the end of my rope at that point though since she was taking her naps on me.
Most books say no earlier than four months, some say wait until six.

With Gabriella, I always laid her down awake from birth. She rarely ever cried and I would just say and do the same thing for nap and bed. Never any problems (aside from growth/teeth occasionally.)
Gianni was a different story. We started out that way and then he took a turn for the worse, got better, took a turn for the way worse and at 7.5 months, I made him learn by CIO.
I say mild whining isn't bad and it's great to start young because the older they get, the harder it gets.

Me too...although it didn't always "take" until 3 mos. There's a big difference between whining and crying IMO. I say she's not too young to whine a bit...see what happens.

I would say that we were able to do this by about 3 months but there were still a lot of naps at that time that she only would take in the swing/bouncer.

Ella's 7 weeks, and I can put her down awake, yet sleepy and she'll generally nod off to sleep without fussing. Sometimes she needs a pacifier.

I alwasy put them down while awake at night in thier crib, but they napped in thier swings until about 8 months.
It was suggested to us to put them in the crib for long sleeps and have them nap somewhere else until they got a real schedule set. Now they only sleep in thier cribs.
