I heard something about this too. I think you are just not supposed to go near the litter, like you be the one NOT to clean it. I don't think you have to get rid of your kitty though.

First if your cat is indoor you can have her checked out to make sure she isn't a carrier. Also if you have had your cat for years you are most likely immune to it already and most likely isn't a carrier.
Also as long as you scope it out when it is somewhat fresh, wear gloves and wash your hands you are safe according to my OB clinic. Just don't let things sit and grow in the litter.
My job has always been the litter and Dh was supposed to do it but would let it sit and sit so in the long run that IMO is worse. I called my OB and they told me as long as I took precautions I would be safe. I also needed to inquire because when DH was away (which happens alot) I needed to do it anyway.
I've been doing it the past 38 weeks without a problem.. well give or take maybe the two weeks that Dh actually attempted to help.
PS. I could never get rid of my evil "Stitch"

Re: I need your help. What is the thing with cat litter and pregnancy?
My Doctor told me not to change the cat liter. Not to touch it, so my Dh does it. I'm not sure of the reasons behind it but I listen to what my doctor tells me.

Re: I need your help. What is the thing with cat litter and pregnancy?
It has to do with the toxins in the urine.

You can have your cats but you aren't supposed to get near the litter - something with toxins and the dust...

Re: I need your help. What is the thing with cat litter and pregnancy?
the ammonia & other chemicals in the urine can cause Toxemia, which can be fatal for the baby if it is exposed in excess. Even in small doses, these chemicals can affect the development of the baby.

I thought it was because there is a fungus that is possibly in cat poop that can hurt a developing baby?

OK, Michele, you are right, feces does sound more proper than my use of poop. :)

I have heard that pg women shouldn't clean toilets either, because of the chemicals.

No, just cat litter as far as I've heard. For some reason felines are carriers of the toxoplasis. It's more commonly found in kittens and older cats though and if you've had cats your entire life, you've most likely developed an immunity to it. I did a lot of research, because DH and I were considering getting a kitten.

I think it has something to do with inhaling the chemicals.
If you think about it, it could knock the wind out of a non-pg person, imagine what it could do to a pg

Definately makes sense. I'll make DH clean the toilet for these next couple months, just to be safe

Actually it has nothing to do with the urine..it has to do with the feces...
If you have an outdoor cat I would highly recommend NOT changing the litter even with gloves because they are more apt to get toxoplasmosis....BUT if you have an indoor cat you can more than likely change the litter with gloves & mask then wash up immediately afterward.
