Teachers, a question about school lunch money
I saw a teaser on the news today that Gov. Corzine wants to pass a bill that will allow parents to pre-pay for their child's lunch so that the money can't get lost or stolen.
I was wondering, what happens when one of your kids doesn't have a bag lunch or money for lunch? Do you get them something yourself? Or does the school provide something?

Re: Teachers, a question about school lunch money
Our school allows them to charge it, then they must bring in the money the next day. We are looking into a "debit" type system for next year though because no one ever pays their tab off at our school and some kids owe ridiculous amounts of money And these are people with tons of money.

Re: Teachers, a question about school lunch money
Parents can pre-pay in my district. They set up an account for a certain amount of lunches. When the account gets low, the person at the register writes out a slip to be sent home. Then, the parent will send in more cash to be deposited or a check. It works pretty well. If a child doesn't have any money for the day because it's lost or something, they still get their lunch and a slip goes home explaining that they didn't have money.

Re: Teachers, a question about school lunch money
My school is over 90% free lunch, so it's never an issue.

Re: Teachers, a question about school lunch money
That's nice that they let the kids eat and bring the money the next day. I couldn't remember what happened when I was a kid, although I usually brought my lunch.
But disgusting that the parents don't pay the school back.

Re: Teachers, a question about school lunch money
My school has a pre-pay system because the PTA brings in the lunches. But if a child forgets lunch the school provides cereal for that day.

Re: Teachers, a question about school lunch money
Our school sends home letters before the beginning of the month. Based upon income, kids pay a set amount. The parents know at the beginning of the year what lunch they qualify for-full price, half price or free. Then there is the daily amount based upon that as well. Anyway, if a kid forgets lunch or lunch money, they can 'charge' it and they bring in the money the next day. I have personally given lunch money to kids, but not often.

Re: Teachers, a question about school lunch money
When I used to have cafeteria duty I used to give the kids money from my pocket because the lunch ladies gave them a really hard time. Some would pay me back some wouldn't-- oh well as long as they ate.
Now they have to go to the dean's office and the dean records their name and gives them a slip for lunch.
