Re: NY Property Tax Article

Thank you for posting this.

I urge everyone to write to your state representavives about the unfair and unjust imbalance of our state tax responsibility compared to NYS residents upstate.

Email the Governor Here

Find your State Rep's contact info here

In many cases upstaters have much bigger properties than we do, their utilities require a longer distance to be delivered, and their children need to be educated just as ours do - and infact most ride much further on a school bus to do so...

Who do you think is paying for these?

GOVERNOR APPROVES $31.6 MILLION BUFFALO SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION AID PACKAGE

GOVERNOR APPROVES $26.5 MILLION ROCHESTER SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION AID PACKAGE

GOVERNOR APPROVES $17.1 MILLION SYRACUSE SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION AID PACKAGE

GOVERNOR APPROVES $18.6 MILLION YONKERS SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION AID PACKAGE

UM...where are our increases?

GOVERNOR APPROVES $26.4 MILLION AID INCREASE TO CITY OF BUFFALO
GOVERNOR APPROVES $17.9 MILLION AID INCREASE TO CITY OF ROCHESTER
GOVERNOR APPROVES $14.4 MILLION AID INCREASE TO CITY OF SYRACUSE
GOVERNOR APPROVES $1.9 MILLION AID INCREASE TO CITY OF ALBANY
GOVERNOR APPROVES $1.6 MILLION AID INCREASE TO CITY OF BINGHAMTON
GOVERNOR APPROVES $507,000 AID INCREASE TO CITY OF PLATTSBURGH
GOVERNOR APPROVES $2.8 MILLION AID INCREASE TO CITY OF UTICA
GOVERNOR APPROVES $1.6 MILLION AID INCREASE TO CITY OF ROME
GOVERNOR APPROVES $864,000 AID INCREASE TO CITY OF WATERTOWN

Patti, thanks for posting that info. Besides being a downstate homeowner, I am also a teacher in NYC and we have been waiting YEARS to get our share of the state's lottery money. Overcrowding in NYC schools is a huge problem and even though we've been promised $$ I doubt we'll see it soon. The governor probably knows that downstaters aren't likely to support him when he runs for President so he's favoring upstate.

Very true...coming from a born and raised "upstater" we own 3.5 acres of land, our driveway alone is the size of the block I live on now, I had friends come from one complete opposite side of the county to my school...I think she travelled 20 miles to get to school.

One thing I will say about most...(mostly MY) upstate school is it $UCKED! It's a class D school - K-12 in one bldg. Education is something they're DEFINITELY lacking up there. I recall my Junior year participating in a "walk out" because the tax payers veto school sports. I had friends who depended upon a sports scholarship to get them into college and were looking to going into another school (private).

Salaries, believe it or not are comperable to what is being made down here...except for teachers. Teachers on LI make 3 even 4 times as much as they do upstate.

What you pay for income tax should have no bearing on what you pay in property tax.

I've chosed to own property in a place where I pay a village tax. It is my choice to live there and avail myself of the services and pay this additional tax. That tax has nothing to do with what I should (according to current law and not my opinion) pay as far as property tax.

Yes it does. Things like public service that are paid with LI property taxes... are paid in NYC by paying a NYC income tax.

You know why in NYC its set up this way? Because MANY more people in NYC rent... compared to own.

What we paid last year in NYC income tax is roughly the difference between what we would pay in property tax if we lived in Queens vs. Nassau. You get hit as a NYC resident, believe me, you just pay it in a different way.

Yeah... and then add how much significantly MORE housing costs in NYC.

You can't find a house for 400k in Queens. No way! Hell... you can't find a 500k house.

If you can find something thats 500k... its most likely trash or needs a lot of work.

Point well taken, that mostly makes sense to me but aren't the landlords paying the property tax - every property gets taxed regardless of if it's owner occupied or rented.

Yes they get taxed. But since home ownership in NYC is nothing next to Long Island... this is NYC's most lucrative way to get their money.

True, but that has nothing to do with it, how much you pay or overpay for your property is a choice you make.

If you buy like I did in a place where you have additional taxes to pay you should still have an equal responsibility to the state.

I'd like to add that I have a huge problem with taxes and I really think gov't should be downsized and we should be absloved of paying most taxes.

There is no separate Long Island income tax as there is in NYC.

I pay the same NY state tax living in Queens as I do living in Nassau now.

Oh my NYC paycheck... they take out Federal Taxes, State Taxes, and NYC (local) taxes

On my Nassau County paycheck... they take out Federal and State taxes. Thats it.

And in both instances... the amount of federal and state taxes they out is the same.

You said why don't they raise the NYC *property* taxes. They don't raise the property taxes because

A. the real estate costs so much more (so they get more mortgage tax - closing costs are more so thats more money for the government)

B. NYC residents already pay an extra NYC tax that people outside of NYC don't pay.

2k taxes for a 2mil building is insanely low.

Most 400-500k homes usually have 2k yearly taxes.
