If you buy a house, does the county or the town come in and change the taxes because you are new in the house or should they stay the same taxes the previous owner was paying?

yes they reasses...
but unless some major work was done to the home...the taxes listed are probably close to actual

not always. ours weren't and for whatever reason we are one of the lowest in the neighborhood. all lots are 1 acre zoned and we have over an acre plus a pool so not sure why the smaller sized homes w/ less property and no pool are higher. no complaints, just interesting to compare.

in re: to star, the previous owners deductions roller over for the current year. i just applied for next year on 3/1.

Town of Islip told me that all I had to do was send in my application with a copy of my deed & my star exemption would continue with us.

The taxes are not reassessed unless you are buying new construction and the current taxes are still based on vacant land or the taxes from the prior owner had exemptions which you are no longer entitled to (Veterans, Star, etc.). If applying for a C/O or a C/C your property taxes also could go up.

Taxes will go up, as most taxes do every year, but towns do not reassess for no reason. (Well, they do....but that's a whole nother political discussion....Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon )
