I agree. In past years I would say savings bond but the gov't has made them a real PITA to get now. You need the child's complete name, address and social security number and then the gov't mails it to the house a few weeks later. You can't just walk into a bank like you could pre-9-11 and get one.

I got one for my friend's child and they printed her info wrong... it created a hassle for my friend.

Re: Communion gift question

The last communion I went to I got a $50 savings bond and a $25 gift card to Toys R Us. My friend thought it was great her son had a little something for now and something for later.

DH goes to the bank to get the savings bond with the name and mailing address of the recipient but he can use his own SS# when purchasing. When the recipient cashes it in, they will be asked for the correct SS#. They give him a little gift slip to put in the card. We have done it a bunch of times and there was never a problem. I don't know if you still can, but you used to be able to order them online.

Re: Communion gift question

I just got a bond for my friends baby..went in with the name and address and they gave me the gift certificate. They had the bond in a week, it got there before the actual christening. Pretty quick and easy!!

You could also check the religious stores, we were in there looking for a christening gift and they had a lot of cute religious stuff for communions too.

Re: Communion gift question

If family, I usually give $100 check and a gc of $25 to Toys R Us. My family doesn't do bonds for some reason.

If friend, $100 bond.
