okay, we have a cat, Mr. Giggles.

Over the past year we have had problems with him:

- peeing on Phil's clothes in the laundry baskets

- he peed on our bed and ruined the comforter, the sheets, and the feather bed

- he has ruined 3 cushions for a chair we love,

- and last night we found that he peed on another comforter and the rug in our guest room.

Phil riped up the rug and is currently (and I mean as I am typing) installing wood floors in the guest room.

Phil wants the cat gone and I do understand his point of view. We work hard for the things we have and it's really frustrating that Giggles keeps ruining things.

Giggles is currently in the basement, I have gone downstairs to hang out and play with him and pet him and I brought his bed down there and all his toys. It's a big basement, so it's not cruel or anything. And does tend to hangout in the basement alot.

I don't know what to do? I can't get rid of him, he is my baby. But this needs to be solved.

Anyone else have this problem and resolved it?

Has he been to the vet? One of my cats was peeing out of the box, and it turns out that she had some crystals in her urine that indicated an infection. Going out of the box was her way of alerting us to the fact that she didn't feel well. The vet gave her some shots and she went back to the box after that.

Sorry I had cats growing up but never had this problem. I would call a vet tomorrow and see what they suggest.

Lat summer when it started we got all sorts of tests done (cost us about $400) and the vet said it was behavorial.

We realized he was marking his terroritory because there was a stray cat, but then the stray cat went away and it stopped.

But then it started again, I haven't seen any stray, then it stopped again, then it started. I can't figure out why he is fine for a while and then all of a sudden he pees.

I had the same problem with my cat years ago. He was urinating on the rugs and furniture. It turned out he had crystals in his urine. We had to get rid of everything that he urinated on (b/c if they smell the scent they tend to repeat the action) and once he was given his meds he stopped the behavior.

Good luck!

I am calling the Vet tomorrow and bringing him in ASAP. I am not getting rid of him, that's not an option for me.

I don't know how I am going to handle Phil, he wants him gone. Chat Icon

sounds to me that Giggles is jealous of your DH. did u have thi cat before DH?? bc this is very common behavior. Giggles is missing all your attention

Same thing happened to me. I thought it was behavioral, but the cat was really sick from urinary tract problems. He almost died twice from urinary blockages. But then he had surgery and no problems since. Take him to another vet.

Re: I posting on this board bec I am at my wits end

poor Mr Giggles!! I hope he's ok. My cats did this when we moved....they peed in the living room.
They also did it when they were ill....kidney failure and such...they were older so we put them down.

It's possible that he's spraying due to another stray cat or even a wild animal.

Could it be the new puppy? I know you got him a while ago, but maybe giggles feels ignored or something.

I'd hate to see him go, but if he continues to ruin your house....something HAS to change

Our cat went through this too...we thought it was because we found him as a stray, but it happened well after he was going in the box. We took him to the vet and he immediately diagnosed him as having a urinary tract infection, after a few days of medicine it was gone. He said it is a way for a cat to alert you that they are sick. He got it once more and once he went outside the box we took him again to get the medicine. I would go to another vet.

Re: I posting on this board bec I am at my wits end

I have that ongoing with my kitties. I have no words of advice except to try some behavioral rememdies. Regi can help, my cats have been doing it so long I just wash things, replace things..I'm putting hardwoods on my stairs soon because of it. I'm eliminating all carpet from the house. When we lived in another apartment there was no carpeting and we had no problems.

Tara, I'd get a second opinion- maybe it is a UTI? I think its worth a shot.

Awww Tara. Chat Icon How hard for you! I do feel like it is behavioral with Giggles--he chooses clothes and your favorite couch to go on...When my cat was having accidents due to health he would try to get in as hidden and unused a place as possible.

I don't have much advice to add to what these other ladies have said, but just wanted to send you Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon .
We went through something like that with my family's old cat a few times - for no seeming reason, she'd pee behind this one chair. We'd scrub and neutralize it, and she would still go back and do it again. Then she suddenly stopped. And for a while she would pee in any plastic bag she found. Cats are so strange sometimes.
I hope that you can figure out why Giggles is doing this, and find a way to make it stop!!Chat Icon

Re: I posting on this board bec I am at my wits end

That' happened to my baby Jack, he has feline lower urinary tract disease. To make a long story short, he's doing well now and is on prescription food for life. DH wanted to get rid of him also especially because he needed a couple of trips to the emergency room to be unblocked (if the cat has crystals and you don't realize, they will eventually block the urinary tract). We switched Vets 3 times before we found one who could tell us how to help him (Dr. Fravola in Huntington).

Have you noticed Giggles licking himself more or trying to sit in his water dish? It's very common in male cats.

As, have you guys moved? Is Giggles fixed? Is it possible that he's marking his territory?

Please keep us posted, I hope everything works out.Chat Icon
