Michi, I take it sometimes when I have to go into school. I think it's $5 and you can use a regular Metrocard. Once you are in the city, you can transfer once for free to a regular bus or subway.

On the way home, $2 gets deducted from your card and when you get on the express bus they take the other $3 to make up the difference. I am pretty sure that's how it works. Correct me if needed, Don Chat Icon

ETA: I just saw on the MTA site that you can get a 7day Express bus plus metrocard

Re: Don! i have a question for ya Re: express bus:-)

you buy a regular metrocard, but I don't think you can buy an unlimited one.

You can transfer from Express bus to train or regular bus for free.

I thought it was $5 since March, but I have noticed when my metrocard dips it always says "$4.00 paid".
In addition, if I take a regular city bus up to the express bus stop I pay the $2 fare and then when I get on the express bus it says " 1 Xfer OK" ... so I think I only pay $2 on those days.

the only unlimited pass for express buses is a 7 day one and in my opinion it's not worth it unless you use it on weekends. It's only good say Monday - Monday

I think your best bet is just the regular metro card so you can use it on express, local and subway.

Good luck!

michi, from what i know

express buses in queens do NOT take unlimited metro cards. You need to buy a regular card and put a certain amount on there.

if it's 5 dollars each way, you'd need to put $50 a week on the card.

You also may want to see if your company offers TransitChecks, which is deducted from your paycheck, pre-tax, so you save money.
