When the baby is born how do you know what brand of formual to give to the baby? Does the dr tell you or do you just do it by trial and error? TIA

Re: who determines formula?
Your PED will suggest giving your child X brand at the hospital. I know at Winthrop there was a list on the Ped's and the forumula they suggest which is given to your baby while in the hospital. Now if you feel strongly about using a different one you can always tell your Ped this and I am sure they would have no problem switching.
Some babies with AR drink different formulas which the Ped will let you know.

Re: who determines formula?
The hospital gave us Similac Advanced so we stayed with the Similac family until DD had various intestional and a/r problems and then we swicthed to several (ok, MANY) diff types...we ended up back with Similac Alimentum... our ped told us which to try and when to switch though

Re: who determines formula?
The formula companies have contracts with the hospitals, except for the very special formulas such as premiees, medical conditions etc... It is all about marketing $$$ which formula your hospital uses.

It worked well for a month untill we found out our daughter had a milk allergy - our peditrician then recommended Similac Alimentum and its been working great.

Absolutely correct!! Started out with Similac Advanced and switched to Nestle Good Start, it was much easier on her tummy.

Re: who determines formula?
Thanks girls! I actually agree that the hospitals do probably give what the vendors bring in for marketing purposes. I heard the nestles good start was really good for the babies. I was thinking of going that route but I guess like some of you mentioned...you never know with the allergies etc...

My PEd said to do either similiac or enfamil, he calls them the coke and pepsi of formula. DD is on similac powder

After switching formulas 4 different times, Nestle Good Start was the best for our DS.
