4th grade and up..what do you do on the first day?
When I was a lower grade teacher...I would read some cutesy story...and now I feel like I can't do that...or can I??? Also...I have most of my kids from last year so they have already heard ..First Day Jitters, Chysanthemum, Lily's Purple Plastic Purse etc

Activities:
*Getting to know you BINGO
*All About Me bags
*Two goals for the year writing for bulletin board
Read Aloud:
*This is the Way We Go To School
*Crysanthemum (with writing activity on how/why students got their names)
*First Day Jitters
I think kids LOVE being read to, no matter what the age. I also think re-reading favorite books is ok too!!!

Give them toilet paper and tell them to take as much as they need. They have to say one thing about themselves. (I have also seen it done with M&Ms).

we usually do memoirs in sept, so i usually start with a memoir about the first day of school to get the ball rolling. we dont do much "cutesy" stuff sadly. but my school is hardcore Balanced Literacy and data driven. kinda sucks the fun all out of it!

I'm in exactly the same boat! I taught Kindergarten, and now I'm teaching 5th!  We're starting 2 weeks from tomorrow, and I'm really starting to wig out!!!  I gotta get going!!!
I do agree with one of the PP that read-alouds are good, no matter what grade you teach.

I am not sure if this is what you mean, but Ive done an activity where everyone is in a circle and you toss a ball of yarn to one person. They say someting about themselves and then toss it to another student.
We also do All About Me sheets with pictures.

I do an "All About Me" poster as well.. gives you an idea of where they are it with basic skills (writing and spelling). I also have the kids write and talk about their goals for the year...
I also did a "Me" box where the kids had to put things that were important to them in a shoebox and share with the class why each item was important to them... they really enjoyed it and it was interesting to see what they put in there... taught me a lot about their home lives, interests, etc.
