4th grade nyc teachers
What do you use to teach literacy in your classroom? We don't have any books, we were just told no test prep will be allowed until December and at the present time we can't make copies Our principal finally broke down and asked us for a wish list for our grade. We know we want ELA material but we're not sure what to ask for. O yeah it can't be a basal reader and nothing too expensive
HELP!!

No test prep....man my school is pushing test prep down our throats....the last 3 days my kids took an ELA practice test
We have a whole room in our school dedicated to books...all at different levels. I can check out names of and types of books we use tomorrow

Re: 4th grade nyc teachers
I am not NYC, but am balanced literacy and grade four. you might have these already, but I know I like: *F and P Guiding Readers and Writers (to set up workshop and many mini lesson ideas) *Strategies that Work (many good reading mini lessons. )
What about going online and getting literacy mini lesson ideas. Scholastic has a lot of info on F and P.
you can do your lliteracy skills in workshop and Guided Reading, and they can end up being what you need for the ELA w/o doing traditional *test prep*.
Do you need Guided Reading too?

you have NO books and no copier???
and they call that a school? I am SOOO sorry for you!!!
i would call scholastic or go on their website and ask for their school catalouge (books only). They give you a 25% off discount on all paperbacks. I bought close to 50 books for less than 200.00 including shipping. they don't charge tax to schools.
also, the scholastic catalouge has the levels of all the books, you can order by theme or subject. you can also order guided reading books. i would order a couple of class sets of paperbacks and do reading through chapter books. Pick a few genres and corresponding books and have fun!
also, go to triumphlearning.com... they publish all the COACH test prep. books... click on the teacher link. request sample copies...they send it to you for FREE! if you or your grade level like them, you can order from them too... they're cheap. (ir sometimes i just photocopy from the samples, even though you're not really supposed to!)

Thanks for the suggestions! I think I might try the coach (even though its test prep. I didn't know they send a FREE sample copy. That could be very helpful to the teachers in my building - even though we cant copy it in school. I'm seriously considering buying my own copy machine I would be worth the $$ to make my life easier.

I still have a box of books up for grabs if you are interested! We use the Coach books, they are good. We have about six ELA prep books that we use for HW and AIS, but the tests are great prep and also we try to use literature as much as possible to integrate skills so it is not "test prep".

Re: 4th grade nyc teachers
I had posted another time that I have some chapter books up for grabs....copies that I have multiples of or that are older copies of books I have.
Come to think of it, I do have some Coach type books lying around. I can see if you are interested.
Also, I know I have gotten Great Source free copies over the years, which are good for skills.

Thanks so much for your offers. I actually just got a bunch of chapter books. As for the Coach books I currently put in a request to my AP begging for some.
I'll keep everyone here updated to let you know if my school actually decides to let us teach again.
