5-6 Week Olds - Weight ?

My son will be 6 weeks on thursday. He was discharged from the hospital at an even 8 lbs. which was Sunday, July 8th... My DH weighed himself with Logan, then without him and it seems as though Logan may be around 13 lbs....

I feel he is gaining tooooo much weight..

I am EBF.

How much does your baby weigh?

Is this normal weight gain?

My DD was already 13 lbs when she was 6 weeks old. Now, she's 3 months and she weighs 15 1/2 lbs. (as of her doctor's visit almost 2 weeks ago), which is "off the chart." The pediatrician was not concerned. Also, I am 95% BF.

DD is almost 7 weeks and we *estimate* her to be around 9 or 9.5 pounds. She was born at 7 lbs. 8 oz. and released from the hospital at 6 lbs. 10 oz.

I've always heard that you can't overfeed breastfed babies-- anyone else hear this? DD is EBF too.

I've heard you can't overfeed any babies--FF or BF. They will cut themselves off when they've had enough.

Re: 5-6 Week Olds - Weight ?

DS was 7Lbs 13 oz at birth. By 6 days he was 7Lbs14oz (he had lost 6 oz in the hospital).

At his 6 weeks appt, he was 12Lbs 5.5 oz and almost 23 inches.

Ped said he was at a championship pace but since DS is only on BM (he only had a 2oz formula bottle per day as supplement for 2 weeks for my milk to adjust to his eating frenzy!) he is not concerned at all.

He gained an average of 2 oz per day while the average is 1 oz. Still, ped is not concerned at all.

It is common for BF babies to gain a lot of weight in the beginning but it levels off a bit after a few months.

Re: 5-6 Week Olds - Weight ?

I was just concerned because my friend has a newborn son who is 7 weeks older (he is almost 13 weeks) and she just went to the Ped with him the other day and he was 14lbs at that visit.. (at birth her son was 8.12; where my son was 8.9)

If my son is about 13 lbs now and her son who is 7 weeks older and 14 lbs.. Im just concerned

DS was 6lbs, 10oz at birth. DH weighed him Monday (same scientific formula your DH usedChat Icon ) at 15.5 weeks and he is 12lbs.

He is formula fed though. At 6 weeks, I believe DS was 9lbs.

Don't bother comparing, you'll drive yourself nuts. My son was born 7.11 and three weeks later my friend had DD weighing in at 10.5 Chat Icon Now DS is 9.5 months old and about 4 pounds heavier than my friend's DD. They all grow at different rates.

My DD was 9lb 4 at birth - but when she left the hospital she was 8lb 13 oz. She was 11 lbs even at 5 1/2 weeks.

She is exclusively BF - our ped told us she should be gaining about 1 oz a day give or take - but that you can't overfeed a BF baby

Re: 5-6 Week Olds - Weight ?

Try not to compare your baby to other babies...they're all different and are going to gain weight at different rates.
I'd be driving myself crazy comparing my daughter to other people's kids because she's a little over 10 pounds at 11 weeks! She's a tiny little thing...but she's healthy as can be.
It's a great sign that he's gaining so much weight on your breastmilk alone! Be proud!!Chat Icon

At DD's 1 month check up she was 11lbs and discharged from the hospital at 8.5. I am also EBF. You can't control how much they eat and they will eventually level out.
