504 meeting without a parent

Just found out yesterday from DD's teacher that the school had a meeting to discuss implementing a 504 plan for my DD. Her teacher and I had discussed it in the fall at her parent/teacher conference, but I was never told that the recommendation had been made, or that they were holding a meeting about it. Is this common to not include or invite the parent to such a meeting?

If it was just a pre meeting then no you do not have to be there. You do have to be there when they "adopt" the plan. I would call up and ask when your meeting is. You have to sign off on the plan and they also need to hear your concerns and adapt the plan to include those.

Re: 504 meeting without a parent

Thank you. I saw the social worker today. It seems they had just the in-house meeting to discuss with DD needs, and when they are ready to adopt the plan, I will be included in the meeting.

This exactly. As a special ed. teacher, the team (i.e. teacher, psychologist, therapists) meet all the time informally to discuss students, our concerns, what is happening in the classroom, what has been successful or not, etc. Parents are ALWAYS included in any formal meetings such as a Section 504 or CSE meeting. We cannot give services or accommodations without your consent.

Thank you.

And I also called a developmental pediatrician to set up an appointment. DD was diagnosed with ADD by a neurologist, but her teacher suggested that maybe a dev. ped. might have different strategies or exercises that we can try with DD that a neurologist doesn't really get into. One was booking first visits for NEXT JANUARY, and the other was booking for July. I took the July appointment and asked to be put on a waiting list for a cancellation. When I told the social worker that I can't get DD in until the summer, the SW was not concerned. She actually said it might be a good thing, because we can get the 504 going, and then we will have some info as to what is or is not working and then the dev. ped. can take it from there. Since she already has the diagnosis, we don't need to wait for anything to get the plan started in the school. So finally, something worked out okay. Chat Icon
