51 years for Drunk Driver who killed LA Angels Pitcher
SANTA ANA, Calif. -- A construction worker who was on probation for felony drunken driving when he ran a red light and killed rookie Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two other people was sentenced Wednesday to 51 years to life in prison.
A judge sentenced Andrew Gallo, 24, amid sobbing from the victims' family and friends who earlier heard Gallo apologize for the 2009 crash.
Prosecutors said Gallo's blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit when he blew through a red light at an Orange County intersection on April 9, 2009, and T-boned the car carrying Adenhart and three friends.
Also killed in the crash were 20-year-old Courtney Stewart and 25-year-old Henry Pearson. A fourth passenger, Jon Wilhite, was severely injured.
Just hours before the crash, Adenhart, 22, had pitched six scoreless innings in a game at Angel Stadium.
Gallo was convicted in September of three counts of second-degree murder and single counts of drunken driving, hit-and-run driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol and causing great bodily injury.
Prosecutors had asked that he be sentenced to three consecutive terms of 15 years to life.
"His conduct showed a complete disregard for the safety of others," Deputy District Attorney Susan Price said in court papers filed before the hearing.
Prosecutors said Gallo spent hours drinking beer and shots at three different bars with his stepbrother before driving off in the family's minivan. Jurors saw a videotaped interview in which he told police he didn't remember driving that night and apologized to the victims' families.
Gallo's attorney had called for one sentence of 15 years to life, saying her client never intended to hurt anyone.
Attorney Jacqueline Goodman said in court papers that Gallo's stepbrother was supposed to be the designated driver that night, but that Gallo took the wheel when his stepbrother became too drunk to drive.

I wish the sentencing would be consistent across the board.
One person gets 4 years or maybe a slap on the wrist, another one gets 51 years. Hopefully that does not mean that because you were an athlete, your life deserved more justice.
Regardless, it's time for harsher punishment for drunk driving.

I don't think it was because he was an athlete but rather that he killed 3 people and he got consecutive sentences.

Plus the fact that he was already on probation for felony drunk driving.

I'm glad he got a nice long punishment but I believe that if you are caught driving drunk the first time, your car should be taken away as your license.

Agreed! I like that he was apologizing. For what? Apologizing won't bring back the 3 he killed. You're sorry your azz got caught and you'll rot in jail. You deserve it!!!!!!!

Funny how the drunk driver that killed Nick Adenheart gets 51 yrs to life, yet if you ARE the ballplayer driving drunk, you get a $500 fine and probation
Just sayin'
caviat: I understand this guy killed 3 people and had a record, but really Leyritz has a serious history of this crap.
Such a double standard out there.
If ANY one of us pulled the shyt that Linsay Lohan has, we'd be locked up sending our kids Christmas cards from the clincker or rehab

I completely agree. I hope they didn't use his status just to make an example out of the guy, because every DD deserves harsh sentences.

And I do agree that celebrity status also is a double standard and means leniency when they are the ones who get caught
