Elizabeth Michele - 7/3/10
On Saturday, July 3rd at 5am I got up to go to the bathroom and noticed some wetness mixed with blood. We all know how much stuff comes out of you towards the end so I really didn't think too much of it. About an hour later I felt another little gush of water, but again, it wasn't this huge rush like everyone tells you it's going to be. I was having more noticable contractions at that point, but they weren't regular and still about 10-12 minutes apart. At 8:30am I felt another little gush of water and decided that it was time to wake up DH and head to the hospital. I kept telling DH that I was going to feel really silly if I'd just been peeing myself all morning.
We got to the hospital and were admitted to triage and that's when the real gush started and it came along with some pretty strong contractions that were 4-5 minutes apart. I got admitted to L&D and got an EPI about 3 hours later. OMG, the EPI is the best invention ever! I went from being in extreme amounts of pain to not feeling anything at all.
After getting the EPI I progressed quickly on my own. I went from 5 to 8 within 2 hours, but that's when the trouble started. They noticed that the baby's baseline heart rate was gradually increasing which is an early sign of infection. I was also spiking a fever at that point. The dr told me that I'd need to make quick progress on my own so that I could get the baby out before she was in any danger.
I made it to 10cm very quickly, but at that point the baby's heartrate had increased to over 180bpm. My doctor told me that she could only give me an hour to push the baby out or else I would need to have a c section. The EPI was working so well that I literally couldn't feel anything and I wasn't making enough progress with each push. At this point I was shaking pretty badly because of my fever and it got a little scary. I was rushed into the OR for a section.
At 6:15pm Elizabeth Michele was born via c section. Luckily, Beth was just fine and the uterine infection didn't affect her much. She had a mild fever, but they were able to bring it down quickly. I was trembling a lot while I was in the OR, but once they closed me up it started to subside.
Overall, it was not the experience that I had hoped for, but from reading other peoples' stories I've seen that childbirth is almost never what you expect. I'm just happy that I have a healthy baby girl.
