Pregnancy and pets
Hi Ladies! Im new on this site (M&S Sept12006 from LIW)...I decided to sign up since I've been reading your posts for the past few months and would love to participate.
Mike and I are getting married September 1st and we're planning to start a family right away. We have a dog, a Boxer, who is 2 1/2 yrs old and VERY and I mean VERY attached to us. Im sure some of you have dogs...how did your pets assimilate when the baby arrived???? I love my dog to death and I hope that we wont have any problems with him being jealous of the baby... I understand that in the hospital they teach you how to introduce the baby to the dog, but I was wondering what your experiences have been like...
Thanks!

Welcome!! You might want to post this on the Parenting board also. My baby's not here yet --we have also considered our dog our first baby -- I think he'll adjust alright, though.

Re: Pregnancy and pets
Welcome and hello.
I haven't had my baby yet, but this was an issue for us as well. Our dog, is after all, our "first child."
I am starting to introduce her already and we always say "when the baby comes" and stuff like that. She definately knows shomething is up because of the renovations we have been making to the apartment and getting ready to do the nursery. We already started calling it "the baby's room." So, she has an idea something is coming.
At first, when we would say "when the baby comes" she used to run over to us, thinking that we were calling her to us, because she was always "baby girl." Also, I got a CD with baby noises, like crying and stuff like that. She seems to be doing OK with that. It's not so much the baby that I am worried about, I am nervous how she will be when the baby becomes a toddler and starts touching and grabbing.

Re: Pregnancy and pets
i have started making changes to the dog's behavior. not letting them jump on couch or sleep with us anymore- that way it isn't that much of a shock when the baby comes.

Re: Pregnancy and pets
One important thing to do is to bring a blanket to the hospital and use it on the baby and bring it home for the dog to get used to the baby's scent. You could also get a doll and hold it around the dog so they get used to the idea of you holding something so small

Re: Pregnancy and pets
When my older daughter was born, we had an English Springer Spaniel that was 4 years old. He was definitely our "baby" and was territorial. He wouldn't allow any other dog near our property and, certainly, not in our house. When we brought our daughter home, I came in the house first without her so he could get his excitement of seeing me over with before my husband brought her in. When he did, he bent down with her so "Dudley" could see her and get her scent. Dudley came over, looked at her, sniffed her and walked away. He didn't pay any more attention to her until she could get around. He didn't exhibit any jealousy or any aggressive tendencies toward her. He just ignored her. Dogs are pack animals and will accept, ordinarily, another member of the pack (family) as long as that member knows their place in the pack. My children were always taught as they grew to respect the animals in our home and our dogs are taught to respect the newest addition. My grandson is almost 5 months and the three dogs I have now know their place when he is around and he is learning to appreciate and respect them. It's all in training; both the animals and the humans.

Re: Pregnancy and pets
Mine were AMAZING from the day she came home....they sniffed at her and really just wanted to be near us as they always had. There was no animosity...maybe a little jealousy, but it's so funny now...
she talks to them and when they come near her she reaches out to them

Re: Pregnancy and pets
We had 2 dogs when we brought our son home. My DH brought a few receiving blankets home from the hospital for the dogs to smell. There were no issues at all. We kind of expected the female to get a little weirded out (she was always a bit snippy) but she was surprisingly good to the baby. My male is just a big goof and for the most part was also great. They just needed a little attention too when we brought the baby home.
