5th bedroom means new septic?
Has anyone dealt with this before?
We’re finishing our basement soon and are putting a bedroom down there (which would bring us from 4 bedrooms to 5) with an egress window and all.
Apparently now there is an issue that we can’t do that since our septic system isn’t big enough for a 5 bedroom house and it won't be up to code.
Has anyone heard of such a thing? i'm so angry and annoyed.

I have not heard of that. Our house was expanded from a 3 bedroom to a five bedroom by the previous owners and we still have the original septic tank. We are in brookhaven and the addition was done in 1996

5th bedroom means new septic?
We bought a 3 bedroom ranch that we converted Den into a 4th bedroom.
It was lived in for over 30 years by an elderly couple and then just her when he passed.
5 months there and already our pipes have backed up and we had to pump cesspool. Company told us we HAVE to add another pool in our yard for plumbing as soon as possible. The house just wasn't meant for a family of 5.

Yes I've heard of this before. Some people opt to call a bedroom a library or office and not a put a closet in it to avoid this.

That doesn't work, at least not in Town of Islip. I have a library, an "office" (DON'T call it an "office"... that means that you are doing business out of there, and all sorts of other rules... it's a "den" or "study" or "computer room"... ), a toy room, and a craft room/DW's "study". According to the town, I have 7 BRs, and their septic system calculations are based on 4 people per "bedroom", since if I sell the house, someone else might do that. For 4 people, I have a septic system designed for 28 people! This is all first-hand experience, and very recent.
ETA, the town doesn't care at all about what Real Estate Agents call a bedroom. Closets are irrelevant (no closet in any of my "extra bedrooms"), and it doesn't even need a door, just the possibility of easily making it into a bedroom. Two of the "bedrooms" have an 8' wide opening, with no door, but it still counts....

I remeber something about this when my ex and I were considering expanding our 2 bedroom home. This was the Town of Brookhaven.
