8-year-old saves little girl from drowning at public pool

(06/29/10) BETHPAGE - An 8-year-old girl is being hailed a hero after she saved a 6-year-old from drowning in a public pool over the weekend.

Rebecca Zuzio, 6, says she almost drowned when she slipped off the diving board at the Bethpage Community Park pool this past weekend.

According to Domenica Nizzari, 8, Zuzio was putting her hands up for help, so she jumped in and pulled her to the surface.

Nizzari and her father say the lifeguards on duty were too busy talking to each other to notice the girl drowning.

However, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto says an investigation by the Parks Department shows the lifeguards did nothing wrong.

Zuzio's parents say the lifeguard should be fired and that the town is downplaying what could have been a tragic incident.

I find it hard to believe that if the life guards were paying attention that they could miss this, especially since it happened at the diving boards.

I agree, but I've never been a lifeguard so I guess if they had a good explanation, other than that they "did nothing wrong," I could understand it.

what a great story about the 8yo.

pitiful on the lifeguards behalf. how do they sleep at night with such a close call. it's shameful.

I agree. I was once at a public pool with my DD who was 1 at the time. We were in the "baby" pool and she was toddling around. I was walking behind her. There was 1 other baby and mom in there. My sister called to me and I looked over for probably 3 seconds. When I looked back down, DD was face down in the water, sinking to the bottom!! I screamed, and pulled her up. She was choking the water out of her mouth, and the lifeguard just SAT there!!! Did NOTHING!!! This lifeguard was assigned JUST to the baby pool!!! You can NOT trust them!! He never even came over to DD to see that she was ok! Chat Icon
