9 weeks old - Schedule getting worse ETA: Another question..

The first 5-6 weeks my DD was pretty good about eating, sleeping, playing etc on a fairly decent schedule. It wasn't perfect but it had rhythm.

Now since about 7-8 weeks I don't know what is happening. She barely eats an entire bottle. She will eat a little, stop, eat a little stop..etc etc.. We joke that she is like a cow, grazing all day. Then of course there are instances where she screams bloody murder and downs an entire bottle like I haven't fed her in a month.

Then as for sleep she takes a cat nap, wakes up, take a cat nap wake ups.. all day with bursts of so much energy.

When 5pm-6pm come, she is tired and wants to sleep until 10pm. At 10pm it is party time. I can usually get her back down to sleep by like 11pm, but at 4am it is party time AGAIN. of course 4am is the worst time b/c by the time I fall back to sleep it is time to get up and go to work.

If I try to keep her up between 6pm-10pm she either falls asleep anyway or gets insane. Am I doing something wrong? or is it just par for the course and hopefully as she gets older her schedule will get better?

Re: 9 weeks old - Schedule getting worse

Both of my babies were at their most unsettled between 6-12 weeks.

It was hard to figure out a schedule. I did try the "eat, play, sleep" routine. Feed them after they woke, changed them, play mat or cuddle time, then put to sleep. I tried to feed every 3-4 hours during the day.

Sleeping from 11-4 sounds about normal for that age, unfortunately. I bet by 12 weeks, it will stretch out to a later wakening. By 12 weeks, my older son did his last bottle by 10:30, and slept until 6:00.

It will get easier as she grows! I know it is exhausting.Chat Icon

Re: 9 weeks old - Schedule getting worse

FWIW weeks 9-16 were VERY trying for us... we felt similarly, that things were getting worse instead of better. We were up every 1/2 hour to an hour overnight from 11pm through 5am on our bad nights.

Thankfully, after we introduced cereal around 4 months old, our LO starting sleeping through the night, the schedule improved significantly and we all regained our sanity.

I hated when people told is it would get better because I truly believed it never would but, coming from the other side, it does Chat Icon Hang in there!!!

I actually felt myself sigh from relief after reading those responses. Thanks Ladies. I feel like I am doing something wrong b/c there is just no consistency. I don't mind being on her schedule but when I have to go to work it is so trying! Hoping her schedule gets better as she gets older. Thanks again!

9 weeks is way too early to have any kind of schedule IMO and IMO when you get a baby/child of any age on a sort of schedule it will change due to growing/learning.

Roll with it

9 weeks old - Schedule getting worse

We had a schedule, but now DS (12 weeks) sleeps a lot less during the day so now there is no schedule. In the last week, He pretty much refuses to nap unless he's in the swing, stroller, or car. Luckily, he sleeps well at night. From week 7-9, he'd sleep 10-4,4:30-8:30. Then suddenly at 10 weeks he'll go 9:30-8. It will get better.

I have a follow-up question.. If your child doesn't have a true "schedule" and they go to daycare--what do they do about napping, feeding etc? I called a few day cares and they are wonderful enough to say "we will follow your schedule" and I feel like saying.. you may as well ask my DD what she feels like doing today haha!

9 weeks old - Schedule getting worse ETA: Another question..

My DD never had a schedule until she went to daycare, and then she was one of the holdouts..LOL..I always fed on demand and let her play and eat and sleep however during the day because she would sleep through the night..eventually, daycare got her on a schedule and we kept to it in terms of the naps, but always fed on demand..I am doing the same with DS and he is sleeping from 9-10 until 5-6 (he's 14 weeks) but sometimes during growth spurts, etc. what you are describing happens..

This. We knew approximately how many bottles DS was eating a day but timing of feeding and napping was never quite on a schedule until he started daycare and we've used that routine since.

In the infant room, my daycare does not force a schedule and follows the baby's cues.

I'm sure there's a bit of routine but it's not set in stone.

I worked with infants in daycare for years. We always followed the child's/parent's schedule.
