A Census Question and Vent
So I happily filled out the census and sent it out on time.
Then last week there was a note on the door from a census worker saying she stopped by and to call the main office w/any questions. So I called and left a message saying that I had already filled out the census, gave my address and said to not send her out again, as I'd already filled it out.
Well, she stopped by again yesterday. I didn't answer the door, for several reasons. I feel bad that she came out here again. I haven't called the office yet. I am not sure what to do or why they sent her out again.
Should i call again and tell them AGAIN to recheck their records? It's getting a little frustrating, and I feel bad for the girl who keeps coming out due to their error.

Re: A Census Question and Vent
Well I would not feel too bad for the girl, it is a paid job
You could call again but what a PITA, you sent the census AND called. I would probably wait and if she comes again tell her.

Re: A Census Question and Vent
I know she is getting paid, but it seems like a waste of money.
If DH is home next time, I'll answer the door. It's too hard to stand at the door and talk to someone when you have a cat who likes to escape lol

Re: A Census Question and Vent
I hate the census. I sent it in with the answer of only 2 live here and no other info. they sent a guy here. we told him we filled it out. he said ' a lot of people are telling me that, would you just fill another one out with me, it will only take a minute?". dh said 'no we already did it and we're not doing it again'. he said 'ok i can't force you. i'll just let the office know you already filled it out'.
a week later there was another note on the door that someone had come back.
don't feel bad. you will never get anywhere with calling.

I don't want to hijack this thread - but why do you "hate" the census? Those numbers are vital to Long Island receiving federal money.
ETA: I work for a private not-for-profit that depends on federal grant money. After the last census we got a $300,000 increase.

Re: A Census Question and Vent
Did they leave a note with their cell number on it? I had that and the regular number. I called the cell and spoke with the guy. He wanted to come back and I told him I just want to get this done here and now. He was very happy to not have to come back and took all the info over the phone (they were looking at the house having three apartments as opposed to the correct two).

i know someone who is doing the census stuff. SHe said it takes time to register from the main office to them so that is probably why she came back.

Re: A Census Question and Vent
Maybe I am biased because my MIL has worked for the census bureau for 6 years and I think of her, wasting her time, going to someone's house multiple times. I do not understand what the big deal is to just re-answer the questions when the representative comes to your house. It takes like 5-10 minutes and then they will be gone and will not contact you again. My MIL only gets paid for the cases she completes AND if she doesn't get your survey then she gets in trouble.

Because it is a huge waste of money and huge invasion of privacy. We file taxes, so they know who lives here. There's no reason for the whole entire thing. Why can't the government use the data they already have instead of wasting paper and resources? oh i forgot, it's the government.
thats why

See now in YOUR case it may be true that YOU pay taxes and the government knows who lives at your address, BUT the illegal apartment dwellers, the homeless (and yes the census workers go out into the woods to try and count them), the transients, the undocumented persons with American born children that are renting illegal apartments - those people aren't captured by tax returns. And those people need to be counted.

Now let me ask you, in all seriousness, do you really, really believe that illegals and people renting illegal apartments will allow themselves to be 'documented' in any way shape or form? Does it make sense that they would allow it if they are knowingly doing something wrong?

I agree with this, and I don't really understand the anger toward them. This is probably going to come across wrong, but how is it an invasion of privacy? The govt has a right to know, and as someone who relies on the census info for my job, it's important that the info is accurate. It takes about 5 minutes. You're not revealing any incredibly sensitive info, giving your name or SS#. I mean, to just refuse to answer the door knowing she's outside knocking seems kind of rude. It seems like it would have taken less time to open the door and tell her your info was already sent in.

Re: A Census Question and Vent
I currently work for the Census and on occassion I do run into someone who 'says' they send it back. Sometimes things get crossed in the mail or aren't recieved on time before enumeraters are sent out. Also sometime people think they mail it in and it really just misplaced in the house, people even INSIST they filled it out online Anyway, unless you answer - someone WILL be back

sorry i should have quoted your "I think the census is a huge waste of time" comment.... If you filled it out... I dont understand why anyone would be *annoyed* if someone came knocking again....
