Re: A Census Question and Vent
I have no idea what you are talking about. But I did ask a serious question.
sorry i should have quoted your "I think the census is a huge waste of time" comment.... If you filled it out... I dont understand why anyone would be *annoyed* if someone came knocking again....
I explained why it's a huge waste of time, and I elaborated further with my question to you which you won't even *attempt* to answer, because you know the answer. Hence, back to the huge waste of time and more importantly, MONEY. Very annoying.

It's unfortunate that you don't see it as an invasion of privacy, but I, like many others, do. That's why I only answered with family composition. The other questions? They can go screw.

Re: A Census Question and Vent
sorry... I just realized I was being an uber jerk last night... I'm really sorry-- of course you're entitled to your own opinion/privacy. Personally, I see the census as helping taxpayers, not hurting us and I guess my point was when people don't comply, and they send out ppl, that could be a waste of taxpayer's money...
anyways- sorry for the *snarkiness...*

I know who you meant...and again to the waste of time comment.
It takes longer to comment on this thread than it does to fill out the form.

And a big waste of money.
This round is costing taxpayers a minimum of $50 per person!

Just be glad they didn't send you the American Community Survey forms.
I not only got the American Community Survey paperwork...
But I filled out my Census forms...
Only to have someone come to my house to AGAIN take down my information...
The American Community Survey is bs, they ask a lot of stuff that isn't any of their business.

The same thing happened to us. We made sure we filled it out and sent it back on time. Tuesday there was a note on our door. It's very frustrating that you do what needs to be done on your end but they can't.

Do you have a source for this info? Just curious about that figure - it's pretty large!

Now let me ask you, in all seriousness, do you really, really believe that illegals and people renting illegal apartments will allow themselves to be 'documented' in any way shape or form? Does it make sense that they would allow it if they are knowingly doing something wrong?
it's been pointed out many times in many threads that illegal aliens register their kids in the school system, so they are documenting themselves.

We file taxes, so they know who lives here. thats why
Maybe the CPAs can help with this...If you are owed a refund, do you have to file taxes?
Accurate data reflecting changes in your community are crucial in apportioning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and deciding how more than $400 billion per year is allocated for projects like new hospitals and schools.
That's more than $4 trillion over a 10-year period for things like new roads and schools, and services like job training centers.
not to mention respresentation in government, which also plays a role in electing the president, historical and genealogical information (my aunt found my great grandfather's census information, it is some of the only paperwork that he has, since he came into the country illegally

stop it.
pointing out the positives is SUCH a HUGE WASTE OF TIME!
for shits and giggles I looked up how many people filed taxes in 2007 (latest year *I* could find) and then multiplied it by $50.
by that $50 number, the census is costing us $6,944,965,400 7 billion dollars.
methinks it's slightly inaccurate.
ETA: there is NO WAY to know you are truly owed a refund if you don't file taxes. and you certainly won't get a refund without filing.

Acording to the GAO the 2010 census is costing taxpayers around $15 billion dollars.
But recent new reports indicate they are about 7% over budget because of uncontrolled expenses and computer issues.
As for us getting what is owed to us, please
How long has it been since NY or LI got back its fair share of taxes?

I'm more surprised their is no outrage that border states will get more reps in DC thanks to the non-identification of illegal immigrants from those here legally.

How long has it been since NY or LI got back its fair share of taxes?
actually, as recently as last year the beloved LI school systems received millions of dollars in federal aid.
I know it's hard to believe, but Long Island could not survive on the taxes its citizens generate alone.
the island could never survive becoming its own state or even its own country it is an erroneous believe that the tax payers of your fair island is holding up the rest of the state and/or country.
ETA: I do stand corrected then b/c I honestly did not realize the census was projected to cost so much this year.
that number DOES seem high....but on the plus side, people how weren't working ARE working so we'll see some of that money back as income tax, and MOST of it back into the economy...

Not the question I asked
When is the last time we got our share back? Most people are aware of the fact NY sends more to DC than it gets back.
"erroneous believe that the tax payers of your fair island is holding up the rest of the state"
Are you going to tell me LI and NYC don't send more to Albany than we get back?
Really? I hope you did some research before making these silly claims

you asked about the when you got money back and I posted that you had recently gotten money back.
as far as ALBANY is concerned (which is different from the Fed) I honestly have no idea penny for penny or dollar for dollar.
some areas are more needy than others.
but I think that when at the end of the day we ALL have an entire govt entity working FOR us...then YES, we are all getting our fair share of what we need.
and I don't think it's "silly" to point out that LI DOES receive aid. and that it could not stand alone and succeed from the state.

Re: A Census Question and Vent
Because research speaks volumes
Federal spending per dollar of federal taxes http://www.taxfoundation.org/research/show/266.html
NY gets 79 cents for each dollar
Long Island school aid NY Times - http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F05E5DC1031F932A25751C1A9639C8B63&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=2
"The state contributes less aid to Long Island school budgets than to those of upstate districts where residents reported similar income. "
"Albany supplies more than half the revenue for most upstate school districts, but only a handful of Long Island districts."
Dowling study shows LI sends Albany $2.7 billion more than it gets back
http://www.makelongislandastate.com/docs/LIESPNov14WhitepaperStateAidToLI.pdf
"Several years ago, the Rochester-based Center for Government Research (CGR) analyzed the “balance of payments” between Long Island and New York State. CGR’s 2001 report concluded that Long Island paid to the state approximately $2.7 billion more than it received back in aggregate state payment and investments."
