How long has it been since NY or LI got back its fair share of taxes?
actually, as recently as last year the beloved LI school systems received millions of dollars in federal aid.
I know it's hard to believe, but Long Island could not survive on the taxes its citizens generate alone.
the island could never survive becoming its own state or even its own country it is an erroneous believe that the tax payers of your fair island is holding up the rest of the state and/or country.
Not the question I asked
When is the last time we got our share back? Most people are aware of the fact NY sends more to DC than it gets back.
"erroneous believe that the tax payers of your fair island is holding up the rest of the state"
Are you going to tell me LI and NYC don't send more to Albany than we get back?
Really? I hope you did some research before making these silly claims
you asked about the when you got money back and I posted that you had recently gotten money back.
as far as ALBANY is concerned (which is different from the Fed) I honestly have no idea penny for penny or dollar for dollar.
some areas are more needy than others.
but I think that when at the end of the day we ALL have an entire govt entity working FOR us...then YES, we are all getting our fair share of what we need.
and I don't think it's "silly" to point out that LI DOES receive aid. and that it could not stand alone and succeed from the state.
More like the counties north of Westchester couldn't make it without the folks downstate.
And yes it is "silly" to point out LI gets aid when its LESS than LI pays into the pot
As for government working for us - that is debatable

Re: A Census Question and Vent
ok, so I am silly then b/c I don't believe the govt works in a "tit for tat" kind of way.
I understand that when I give money, it is divided up for MANY things...and some of those things MAY be things that don't actually pertain or "help" me.
so, the thousands of dollars I paid in taxes last year...well, I guess after they go to pay for police, military, the court systems, teachers, law makers and govt employees salaries, funding for things like the disaster relief that many counties south of westchester JUST recieved b/c of the crazy nor'easters...., funding for things when the **** hits the fan...I don't know.
I don't sit around and pout b/c someone else got a few dollars out of my pocket when they needed it.
I have all that I need in this world so in the global sense, yes, I do feel I am treated fairly.

Re: A Census Question and Vent
I did fill out the census, and I did send it. If they didn't get it, then that isn't my problem. The fact that I called the office to inform them of their error should have been enough. That it wasn't is what annoyed me.
She did leave her number, but there is no way that I am calling her.
I think the census serves a good purpose, but it IS annoying to do your part and still not just be done with it.
No comment on LI becoming a state

Now let me ask you, in all seriousness, do you really, really believe that illegals and people renting illegal apartments will allow themselves to be 'documented' in any way shape or form? Does it make sense that they would allow it if they are knowingly doing something wrong?
it's been pointed out many times in many threads that illegal aliens register their kids in the school system, so they are documenting themselves.
Ok i'll bite. What documentation is required to get your kid into school?

Re: A Census Question and Vent
Many people on disability and welfare also do not file taxes. A SAHM who are unmarried may not file taxes. Many people who work under the table don't file taxes (think many contractors etc, not just illegals work under the table).
Using tax filings isn't a good indicator of where you live. Especially since many people, myself included, use a PO Box in a different town on their taxes.
That said, we sent the census back and still got a knock at the door. Things happen, mail sometimes gets lost. It is what it is.
As an aside, I have a friend that works as some type of statistician for a major university (please don't ask me exactly what she does, i'll never understand it LOL) who depends on a lot of the census data for her research....

Re: A Census Question and Vent
I'm a little confused why Long Islanders think they are unique in that they pay more in taxes than they get back from the state/Fed gov't.
This happens in every municipality in the country.. state/city/local gov'ts... the "haves" regularly pay more and get less back than the "have nots". It's just the way it is.

Re: A Census Question and Vent
wait so I didn't fill one out does that mean they are going to come to my house?
Reason being- we were living with DH's parents and we didn't have a close date yet so FIL put us on his census and told us not to fill out ours because we were accounted for already. But we closed March 19
Should I have filled it out? the previous owners left it for us but I think it got lost when we moved in, I haven't seen it in awhile...

And yes, using tax records are only useful for those of us who pay taxes. For those that don't, and are on welfare/disability, they are still documented are they not? Those using a PO box should get a census form.

Called my house.
called again, Set up appt to do it at work, did it.
Called my house again, two days later
day two- called again.
I call back to tell them Its done and she stil proceeded to ask 5 questions again and stated that they pick at random certain ppl to ask these 5, which were the SAME questions asked already.

Re: A Census Question and Vent
Whats driving me nuts, is this guy has come twice to MY HOUSE asking for info on my NEIGHBORS!
First it was the lady across the st. He wanted her name, number of people etc.
Then I guess he realized when he saw my kids, I was home during the day so a few days later he was back for another neighbor's info. and No I didnt give him any as I dont think it was my business to do so...we sent ours back, thats all I was concerned with.

Now THAT is a real issue. First, I wouldn't want something like this to be based on guesses fromthe neighborhood. And second, it's just not right to bother you for that information.

My understanding is that it's a photo id and proof you reside in the district. You also need to provide a birth certificate for your child.

I recently registered my DD and had to show her birth certificate plus current mortgage statement or paid tax bill and my driver's license.
If we rented we would need to provide an affidavit from our landlord stating how long they've been renting, who is living in the home, etc. Or a tenant affidavit could be submitted - that had to include the tennant's social security number. And the landlord's paid tax bill had to be submitted.

Yes. That's exactly right. They turn away all non-drivers. People who don't drive are not entitled to an education for their children.
To register, you need to provide proof of residency, birth records for the child registered, lease/mortgage agreement, most recent bills, etc.

Soooooooo what you're saying is, no proof of the parents' identity is required. So they really aren't 'documenting' themselves, now are they.

Ummm....well...they are documenting their child and where their child lives, correct? So one would assume there would be parents there unless they are invisible..

There was a list of about 6 things that you could use as proof of your identity, I was too lazy to type it all. And if it is a non-traditional custodial arrangement of any sort - from shared custody to a family member caring for your child while you are serving in the military or whatever - there are a bunch of forms to be filled out and legal documents that need to be provided.
If you google any public school district's website the information is on there. It's not a big secret.
