A-DOS test?
Anyone's DC ever have this test?
Ryan has this set for 12/1, and I would just like to know what they do and ask of him, so I know what to except.

This is the Autism Diagnostic Observational Scale. A psychologist observes the child in a social setting (usually daycare or a classroom) and records the childs interactions, eye contact, affect, responsiveness/awareness etc. Then they write a report based upon what they observe. It's not the most accurate test because its very subjective and its a "one moment in time" thing. If your child is having an off day or they test him at the worst time of his day it's going to look worse. This is the test that put Cole into classic full Autism whch he clearly isn't.

ADOS is the current "gold standard" for diagnosing autism. It basically provides an objective way for psychologists to make observations in order to diagnose children. The psychologist will do a variety of tasks, using toys, with Ryan, and will see how he responds to them, in terms of communication and socialization. The tasks vary based on the child's language skills.
I have diagnosed autism and PDD, just not using the ADOS, as I have not gone for training for it yet. The psychologist will be looking for things like whether Ryan responds to his name, establishes joint attention (will he look from a toy back to the evaluator, back to the toy, etc., to share the experience), shares affect (when laughing, crying etc., will he look at an adult to share the emotion).
It is true that any evaluation is just a "snapshot" of a child. It is really important that anyone evaluating your child take the time to sit with you to gather information based on your report. If you feel that Ryan is not doing things that he normally does at home, you should let the evaluator know that. It is useful information. Also, no one assessment instrument should be used at the only source of information in an evaluation. The psychologist should use other measures, such as a parent interview or a behavioral questionnaire, in order to gather information from you.
I hope that helps a little bit. The most important thing is that the evaluation results in getting Ryan any services that he may need.

My son had an ADOS done in May. It was done by a psychologist (Chris Smith) from Marion K. Salomon, in my home.
Having it done in my house was the best thing. Lance was observed in his normal enviornment.
The test was exactly what the PPs described. The psychologist just played with him, and watched how he interacted with us. It was just like his regular therapy, except with a new person.
It was not bad at all. I personally think it depends a lot on the person doing it. We were very lucky to have someone who was "kid-friendly."

The pyschologist also came to our house and used the ADOS, and gave Christopher his diagnosis of PDD-NOS. I was told you have to be trained to adminster this test.
He asked me many questiins and then played with Christopher to see how he reacted to certain toys and sounds, and language.

Jackie, I could not have described it better! I can not do this specific eval because I am not a psychologist, but I have been a part of dozens for all ages. Cailen was videotaped doing some of the ados with my colleague. I have to say it is the best tool for autism as it looks At the most important aspect- socialization! they used the ados this way? It sounds like he had a poor evaluator!!!!

They offered this test to me to see if Ryan falls on the spectrum at all. If anything, they think he may have mild PDD.
I personally don't feel that he does, and they were pointing things out to me that he does that I have NEVER noticed before. Such as saying that he has 50% eye contact. He has no problem with eye contact unless he is involved or interested in something, which I would think would be something normal a child does. And, it takes a couple of seconds, but once you get his attention, you have full eye contact. They also said he plays with his hands  in a way that goes along the lines with arm flapping. I was like, huh? So, I told them to schedule the test, and we shall see what the results are. THey are doing it in the morning at his school, which should hopefully be the best time to test him.
I may go for a second opinion if it comes back as PDD, just for my own peace of mind.

The ADOS will see if he has joint attention (which is the true function of eye contact) and will also see if his "hand play" is an interfering behavior, or maybe he is just doing it for another reason...

We are currently using the Marion K Salomon agency and we are planning to have his clinical psych done after they close out his current case of eval for ST, SE, OT, PT (he qualifies for the three he has been evaled for so far)
how do you like the agency over all?

how do you like the agency over all?
I only used them for the eval. because I heard that Chris Smith was one of the best. I thought he was great. He explained everything to us, and in the end I felt I could trust his results.
As far as services go, we used South Shore Speech, and Tender Age.
