A fellow unemployed friend and I were talking...
...how do prospective employers check your education?
She does not have a college degree (credits but no degree) and is talking about putting on her resume that she has a degree.
I suggested against it. But her defense is "How will they know? I went to school in AZ"

Re: A fellow unemployed friend and I were talking...
mine was never verified, but it was (when i started) an entry level position. Honestly, I've often wondered myself if these things are ever verified at all.

Re: A fellow unemployed friend and I were talking...
I figured at some point companies MUST verify, esp if it's required for a position!
I told her NOT to lie on her resume, b/c it can come back to bite her in the a$$.

Re: A fellow unemployed friend and I were talking...
I wouldn't do this. We are often audited and the auditors request to see this in the employee's file. If it's not there, you have to submit it in your plan of correction by such and such a date.
I see things like this happen in my profession all.the.time and it's pretty sad. Most of the people I work with are already pretty vulnerable.
It does even more harm to send someone to work with them who is not qualified to do so.

I ask for an official transcript. Perhaps someone can fake that but perhaps I'll can them as soon as I find out.

Re: A fellow unemployed friend and I were talking...
don't lie about that, titles and prior jobs or salary. although i've never had my education verified (i don't think), my last place asked for a pay stub as proof of salary. Thank GOD I didn't up it or I would've lost the opportunity. It's not worth it in the long run.

Re: A fellow unemployed friend and I were talking...
On a related note, many fields are quite small. She doesn't want to take the chance that this gets out, she gets fired, then tries to get a job in the same field and someone knows who she is and the backstory.
I've bounced around to several different agencies and you don't know how many resumes have come across my desk where I knew the person was fired from a previous employer. In some instances, people have worked for me at former employers and didn't know they were applying to the new agency I worked at and I knew the info personally of why they were let go and not just "rumors".
It's just not worth it. She CAN be black-balled.

Re: A fellow unemployed friend and I were talking...
My boss didn't evee call my references, but when we hired someone else, she called NYU to see if graduated in September like he said or really in May & was just being a bum for 4 months. SO, evena little liek liek that could cause problems.
Does she have a lot of credits? Maybe she can finsh up with on-line courses, or transfer credits to a school here & finsh her degree if it will help her employement situation.

Re: A fellow unemployed friend and I were talking...
No don't do it. You should never lie on your resume. A few years ago they made an offer to a candidate here and the person accepted and was here for 1 day. They got a call to come down to HR and disappeared. We found out later the person lied on their resume about their degree and they were fired. You should not do it, very risky especially if its a big company--they check!

That's happened several times at employers I have worked for and that was the reason why----lying on resume.

Re: A fellow unemployed friend and I were talking...
For the job I have now I had to physically bring them my Bachelors and Masters Degrees for their files... Definitely don't lie about anything on the resume, ever!

My mom worked in HR for 10 years & even for the entry-level positions she would verify education.

Re: A fellow unemployed friend and I were talking...
My employer does a background check on all degrees. A football coach got fired from Notre Dame a few years back because they found out he lied about having a masters degree.

It happened to a very smart young guy that worked for DH last year. He claimed he had a degree that he did not have. He was hired but for some reason HR checked his file later on and found out he never graduated. He was doing a great job but they fired him for lying.
