I am finally going to call him today - can you give me an idea of the cost...and the process...how long does it take?

It took about 30 minutes. I dont remember the exact cost, but it goes by the size of the ring. Mine was about $200.

They have gotten a lot more expensive recently.
I would first call and ask for prices because I knew they went up.

I dont know why but I thought that you should nto pay for an appraisal based upon the size of the stone. I'm getting alzheimers. Here's who I used. I needed it for my jewelry insurance.

Re: a few of you recommended 'jewelry judge' for appraisels
This was what I got back from the Jewelry Judge when I contacted them:
Our fee schedule has pretty much remained the same for many years now...As certified Appraisers, our fees are never based upon value. Instead, we base our fees upon the total "carat weight" of an item or on an hourly rate. Typically, anything in gem weight, up to .99 points (just under 1 carat) is $90. Then, $20 each additional 1/2 carat with some variations to benefit the client. Our hourly rates start at $250/hour, during which time, we can typically appraise from 4 to 6 of what we call "typical" items (engagement rings, tennis bracelets, solitaire pendants, etc)

This is who I also use. I think it was something like 80 dollars per piece for the first time; and then if you need updated renewal paperwork it was 30 dollars per piece.
I don't get what the # of carats have to do with the price of the appraisal. If it's a cubic zirconia it should take the same amount of steps and time as a 20 carat ring, no ?

wow! that's
I only paid $100 for my e-ring appraisal by a certified GIA gemogolist (at Kay Cameron in Sayville). that price included a very professional dossier with his credentials and gem quality photos of the ring in addition to the appraisal itself.

GEM Laboratories I had my w-ring appraised there. they did a nice job, but not nearly as nice as where I got my e-ring appraised.

Ahhh ok that's good to know. I thought the $250 was standard regardless of what you were bringing in (including e-rings).
It's good to know you can still get a 1 carat e-ring appraised for $90 (well really $20 more since its more than .99)
This is a good place. I definitely recommend them if you have the budget.
