a few questions from a mommy to be...UPDATED (regarding contractions and labor)
I am preggo with my first child. Last night at the doctor I found out I am 2 centimeters dilated and 60% effaced. My OB said that from the looks of it, I will probably go on my own before my induction date of may 17th.
I have been having braxton hicks contractions for 6 weeks now. I am getting contractions that feel like the BH, only more intense. I am also feeling a lot of pelvic pressure. I don't want to call the doctor or my DH at work unless it is the real thing.
Here are my questions: How many of you went into labor soon after you were 2 centimeters and 60% effaced? What does a real contraction feel like? Should I start timing what I am feeling?
Any and all advice/responses are welcomed. TIA

Re: a few questions from a mommy to be...(regarding contractions and labor)
Is the pain coming from your back to your front? That's the definite sign of labor. Also if drinking water & changing positions stop the pain, it's BH --- with the exception of taking a shower. A shower will slow down true labor contractions.
I would start timing!!
I was 1cm with Maddie & went into to labor 2 days later.
So yes this could be true labor. Because you have other issues to address, don't hestiate to call your doctor.

OMG!!!! THANK YOU!!!!! It is coming from the sides to the front and then down into my pelvis. This is why I asked. Thay are very confusing. The pelvic pressure is intense for like 30 seconds and then goes away. Should I start timing the pelvic pressure? Damn BH! Now I am all confused!

I would start timing if you aren't sure and walk around a bit. If they go away or get better, then it's BH. If they get stronger they could be real.
Also, what Barbara said is true - real contractions radiate from the back.
Also you could be having "real" yet mild, contractions for days before you go into actual labor.

Thank you both so much! OK. I will get into the shower and walk around a bit. If they stop, then it is BH, if not I will call my Dr. right away. Thank you again.

Re: a few questions from a mommy to be...(regarding contractions and labor)
I had BH contractions throughout my third trimester, but the real thing differed dramatically. With BH contractions, my tummy tightened and I felt pressure, but it never hurt. THe morning I started contracting the contractions started in my lower back, hurt like I could never explain and would wrap around to my belly. Everything would tighten very hard and I would experience the most intense pain for about 30 seconds. It was hard to catch my breath during one of them... they started sporadically at first, but started to come at intervals as time passed.
Walk around - if they get more intense, they probably are the real deal. Are they painful, or do you just feel pressure?

I always say that REAL labor contractions take your breath away and you are unable to speak through them in a full sentence. Good luck, sounds like your time may be near!!

Re: a few questions from a mommy to be...(regarding contractions and labor)
I was 1 cm on a tuesday and delivered my son that thursday at 5am so it is possible. One thing that my Dr. kept telling me was that I would know the difference between braxton hicks and real contractions (I kept asking her how would I know when I was in labor) and she was right you will know the difference. I dont think that he braxton hicks felt anything even close to the real contractions. For me it felt like mentstrual cramps in my pelvis. I never noticed where it started and I didnt have back labor. Good Luck and see you soon on this side

This is exactly how it feels to me right now. I showered and ate something. Still no change. They last for about 45 sec. and are about 8 minutes apart.

Re: a few questions from a mommy to be...(regarding contractions and labor)
I was dialated 2cm and 75% effaced at 38 weeks and went into labor at 41 weeks. I wouldn't get caught up in those numbers bc they really don't indicate when you will go into labor.
As far as contractions, if they are radiating from your back on a regularly for a period of time I'd start timing them. You may also feel like you need to hold your breathe or can't talk when having the contractions.
Good Luck!!!

Re: a few questions from a mommy to be...(regarding contractions and labor)
Good luck! For me, there was no mistaking the real contractions, when they started they were much different from BH. I think the main thing was they were actually painful and strong, as opposed to just uncomfortable.

Re: a few questions from a mommy to be...(regarding contractions and labor)
OB said they are the real deal contractions. He also said not everyone gets back labor. They want me to time them for another hour then head down to the hospital. MY MIL lives 5 minutes from NSUH so if I don't go tonight, I can stay there overnight. Wish me luck and thanks for everything!

Hi Ladies! I did not have the baby, yet. I am in "early labor" and they sent me home. I posted an update on the pregnancy board.
