A few questions re: imaginary friends

How old do you think is too old to have imaginary friends?

If you had them when you were a child, did you get along with them?

Did they appear only when you needed them or were they always around to play with you?

Did they leave because you didn't need them anymore / grew out of it or did someone convince you not to play with them?

Re: A few questions re: imaginary friends

I had imaginary friends growing up i had this girl she had dark hair and brown eyes, i cant remember her name now but she use to come to me during the day than at night again in my dreams we use to play all the time, than i guess when i hit 12 years old she stopped coming around so to speak, because i did not need her anymore.
ETA: we did get along but after she knew i did not need her anymore we fought at the end.

I dont remember having an imaginary friend with a name and a persona. I did play by myself from time to time and talk out loud to my dolls and stuffed animals. I simply grew out of it as my interests became more sophisticated.

my sister and I had imaginary friends, bayno and jayno. don't ask me how we came up with that. we used to push them on the swings. I guess they disappeared when I was about 6, when we moved and my best friend lived across the street - i always had her to play with!

Re: A few questions re: imaginary friends

My almost 5 year old son has an imaginary friend. His name is Filthy. Yep, that's right. I have no clue where that came from, don't even ask! Chat Icon His friend is pretty innocuous. He just talks to him at night when he's trying to fall asleep. I'm not setting a place for him at dinner or anything. I think it's just his coping mechanism he developed for falling asleep at night.

I never had one as a child that I can remember. I just talked to myself a lot...still do! Chat Icon

I had one. His name was Cuckoo (I swear I am not making this up) Chat Icon

We got along well...I was an only child, so I think that's why he was around so much. I don't remember how old I was when he "left", but one day my Mom told me that I said, "Cuckoo moved to New York" (I was living in CA at the time), so I guess I had decided that it was time for him to go. I think it's really hard to understand if you never had one....it is a bit freaky looking back at it, but it felt completely normal when I actually had one. It is not a ghost...it is something made up.

In my son's case, it's someone he totally made up. I know that because everytime I ask him what "Filthy" looks like, it changes. Sometimes he's a boy, sometimes he's a man, sometimes he's some sort of animal. I think it's because my son forgets what he told me last time! I think he's whatever he wants him to be at that particular moment.

I still talk out my conversations and talk to myself a lot.

However...as an only child with a VERY vivid imagination, I didn't have an imaginary friend, I had an imaginary village. Yes, I had 20 students in my basement classroom at the age of 8. I took roll call and taught my class what I had learned that day.

I think I was like 6 when Izzy was murdered. It is hysterical now and my family and i laugh our azzes off when we talk about it but it was traumatic when I was a kid.
