a little annoyed at my Dr. office re: genetic testing
So I called to ask about the much discussed topic of Jewish testing. The office wanted me to speak to a nurse first before the Dr. Then, after playing phone tag with a nurse, I finally spoke to her and she is referring my question to the Dr. anyway. So, I still do not know if my Dr. wants me to have tests pre-TTC. In the past, I did get a quick response to questions I asked through the nurse. I hope I do this time.
What REALLY, REALLY got to me was that we talked about how it may be necessary for my husband to have blood tests also. So, she asked for his name in case Dr. wanted to write and Rx. When I told her that DH and I have different last names, her response was, "Oh, that's a problem."
I thought that was very rude. She said that the office has a terrible problem when they refer spouses for blood testing, because as an OBGYN office they don't input men into their patient database. When the results come back and it is a different last name, they cannot match up the results to the female spouse. She said that DH would either have to go to his own Dr. or demand that the blood lab mark the results with an indication that he is "spouse of (my name)." I don't even think there is room for that on a lab result form!!! I am sure this is frustrating for the Drs. office, but it's their job.
I have my reasons for keeping my maiden name and I am sure that some will say, "I told you it gets confusing the way you are doing this." So now I really do wonder if I am headed for a lifetime of stress over not having the same name as DH.

OMG, that is so rude.
you mean to tell me that they run into problems every time a spouse of a patient has to be tested who has a different last name?!?! well, then, they have to change their ways of doing things to eliminate the confusion!
it's not rocket science.

Well, the Dr. called me back and is sending us to a genetic counselor. I assume that person can keep the records straight. He explained the process, etc.

That was rude of the nurse with regards to the last name - there's got to be a way to do it b/c its not like you're the only one - it is more and more common to have different last names. I hope the genetic counselor is better. That is interesting about the doc not giving you an easy answer, I posted a few days ago how my brand new GYN had the tests done on me pre-TTC without even giving me a moment to think about it. Of coures, I don't know your situation. I hope it works out, best of luck!

Well, once I got the doctor, he was pretty clear on what we needed to do. I had forgotten to ask him when I went for my annual exam. This was the first time I had an issue with this office. I'm not generally tolerant of office BS but I really like this doctor.
