A mile in your shoes (long)
I went to my RE with my daughters and husband today, at the urging of the nurses who have been dying to see them. I told the nurses I didn't feel right bringing them, knowing what the IF girls felt because for 3 years, that was me, crying and praying in the waiting room. They told me that babies in the office bring some hope to struggling couples. I compromised and made an appointment later in the afternoon, knowing it wouldn't be full of hopeful women. Imagine my relief, seeing only one grandma in the waiting area.
I was once the girl who was surrounded by pregnant women, older, younger, strange and familiar while I struggled to understand why my body betrayed me.
I avoided the baby showers (plural), a baptism or two, or the mass that was "full of kids".
I endured the stupidest of advice and the sorrowful looks of the older women who "knew better".
I stuffed my drawers with fertility idols, St. Gerard medals and holy water from Fatima.
I was the last to find out that "so-and-so cousin was pregnant... whoops for the 4th time" because everyone was afraid to set me off.
I drank myself into stupidity after 4 failed IUI's and a Dx that made no sense.
And I sometimes downplayed my own pregnancy out of guilt after a successful IVF. It's because I've walked a mile in those shoes. I've decided to post this because once again, I am pregnant. This time, without ART, struggle and anguish. We are beyond stunned but excited.
I still hurt for all of you and promise that I am not surrounding you with my belly in public, and that when you see pics of me with my children, I hope it does bring a glimmer of hope that miracles do happen.
I hope that one day, this too can be you. We are going to tell our families on Easter.

I'm happy for you, congratulations. I always thought that it was great seeing kids in the RE's office. To me it meant hope and that it can happen to me as well.
