A tipping question with a twist...

So I've been using my hairdress for about 14 years. She's worked at random salons and I've followed her around. Well, she just called me and told me that now THIS salon is closing and she's decided to open up a little "shop" in her garage. Just one chair, just her.

Now, since its her "shop" do I still tip her? I know you're not really "supposed" to tip an owner.

TIA! Chat Icon

Re: A tipping question with a twist...

If she were renting a shop or even a chair I would, but considering its her garage and there is really no overhead I don't think I would

Re: A tipping question with a twist...

Sme thing happened to me years ago - my hairdresser started only doing it out of her house.

Years later I still go to her house - I generally only give her $3-$5 more than she asks for depending on what I got done.

I don't tip her the full 20%

Re: A tipping question with a twist...

Rule of thumb has always been if they are not renting a chair and own their salon tipping is unnecessary.

Re: A tipping question with a twist...

I get my hair cut by a woman who does it out of her house. I tip her...it's only $12 for a haircut, so I give her $20. I'm still saving a ton of money.

Re: A tipping question with a twist...

I go to a woman who works out her home (actually she is a friend of my mom's) and I pay $25 for dye, cut & blow so I give her $35.

The same thing happened to me. My hairdresser opened up her own salon with her husband. I stopped tipping her, but I still tip whoever washes my hair.

I go to a girl that works out of her home. What used to cost me $150 she charges $60 for. I gladly tip her. I tip based on service and how well i think it was done not on how much the rent is.

My hairdresser works from her house. I have gone to her for years and everytime I go, I tip.

I go to a girl who works out of her home. I normally give her the amount she charges with no tip. Sometimes I throw in an extra $5 if she does a lot that day and if I'm in the mood!

I can agree with the "don't tip the owner" type of thing if it's in a salon setting.

But speaking as former hairdresser myself, I was always tipped by my clients whether I did the work at their house or mine.

It's for job well done if you are pleased with the results.

I know i am in the minority here, but just my opinion!
