A trick to help avoid having an episiotomy
I took a Lamaze class and the instructor tought us about using mineral oil or olive oil around the outer part of your vaginal opening. You would actualy massage the oil in the area for a couple of minutes once/twice a day.
Has anyone heard this, done this or will try doing this?
She actually said that it will stretch the area out not permanenetly of course but that it does work.
There was a name for it too and I totally forgot. Anyone know?

Re: A trick to help avoid having an episiotomy
I didn't want to have one, I tore really badly and DS was only 6lbs.
Let the doctor decide what they need to do when the time comes, wish I would have

Re: A trick to help avoid having an episiotomy
I honestly think that no amount of massaging with oil is going to prevent a tear..it may help a little, but I such a skeptic. I feel that tears happen and there is no stopping them! Good thing is that I was so scared to tear and while I had a superficial one (4 stitches) it healed great and I would never have known....

I have heard of it. I have heard that midwives often recommend it. Why not try it. It couldn't hurt?

Re: A trick to help avoid having an episiotomy
I asked my Dr about when I was close to delivering, and he FLIPPED out. He said especially if your water breaks you risk passing any germs or infections to were the baby is. To me it was not worth another thought.

Re: A trick to help avoid having an episiotomy
with DS I had an episiotomy. He was coming out SunnySide up, meaning face towards the ceiling vs the floor, and even though I got an episiotomy, I still tore... W/E $hit happens, I'm perfectly fine now hes, fine, and the stiches healed very nicely.
