A very eye opening editorial
I especially found this last part VERY interesting!
"back in 1980, Congress passed the Energy Security Act, which led to the creation of something called the Synthetic Fuels Corp. (SFC). Lawmakers provided SFC with up to $88 billion in loans and incentives to get started (the equivalent of about $230 billion in today's dollars) with the goal of creating two million barrels a day of synthetic oil within seven years.
So why aren't you putting SFC oil into your SUV right now? Well, it turns out that members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries didn't appreciate the competition so they started bringing down the price of oil. From 1980, when SFC launched, to 1986, when it was shut down, oil went from more than $39 a barrel to less than $8 a barrel. Suddenly, synthetic oil didn't seem so important anymore.
In announcing the SFC's closure, then-Energy Secretary John Herrington said that oil prices had simply dropped too low to make it a viable business.
But the good news is that those economics don't work anymore. The state of Montana, which is leading the synthetic fuel charge, says we can now make it for somewhere around $55 a barrel. That's more than a 50 percent discount from what it costs to buy the real stuff.
It's the opportunity of a lifetime, a chance to use OPEC's price gouging and monopoly against it.
So let me be the big, dumb rodeo clown once again and ask the obvious question: Why aren't we doing it?"
The US is a Suicidal Superpower

Because our government is corrupt, and if they did something to help us, it would take money out of their pockets. My Dad always says we should use the fuel we have in supply and start making our own again, but our own government works against us.

Because the oil companies are lining the pockets of our President, VP and others in Congress.
And people think we live in a democracy where the people are heard!...

because our president is an oil man. it's not just THIS President though. there have been 3 other Presidents in office since 1980 (Reagan, Bush 1 and Clinton).
it's infuriating that synthentic oil at $55 a barrel can be produced and is NOT!

This is true, but oil prices have never been this high since the 1970's.

This is true, but oil prices have never been this high since the 1970's. my DH thinks this current surge in oil prices has something to do with Iran. he thinks a lot of countries are stockpiling oil like crazy b/c something is up with Iran.

Re: A very eye opening editorial
yes, but honestly, ALL the Presidents we have had in recent years are well-connected wealthy men. they don't care or don't understand what it feels like to have to cut corners on things like gas, food, etc.
We have had the technology for years for hybrid cars, electric cars, synthetic gas, nuclear power, solar power, ,etc. etc. we don't do it because of the almighty stock market.....all of thiss billion dollar companies are connected and who are their shareholders??? the wealthy like the politicians in our country. also because of stupid agreements we've made like NAFTA and with OPEC....the foreign governments have us by the balls. we are stuck paying their prices.

Re: A very eye opening editorial
I don't think very many in government (or the country for that matter) takes this issue very seriously.
The rich dont care about the price of oil and the poor grumbles about it.
We, as a nation need to put pressure on our politicians to answer THIS question...
Will you bring down the gas price?
If they say yes, then they need to be asked HOW and WHEN??
If they say no, then they need to be held accountable as to why not.
