a year and no luck - what next?

so it has been about a year that we have been trying with no luck so I am going to make an appoitment with my OBGYN to see what is going on.

Can anyone tell me what to expect? What will she check for? Will my DH have to be tested?

Good luck!!! The doctor will do a blood work up on you to check your hormone levels to begin with. They just try to rule out reasons that could be effecting your fertility. They can also prescribe you medicine to help you be more fertile. I will be thinking of you!!!

I think it is good that atleast you can run some tests with your doctor and give you some peace of mind.Chat Icon

Re: a year and no luck - what next?

they will probably start by checking your blood hormone levels and then do an internal sono to check that everything looks "normal".

You may want to make an appt w/ a RE and not a regular OBGYN. A RE will probably know more about which testing to do and will go over all of your options with you. Just something to consider!

what is an RE?

I am going to go to my regular doctor first. I am really hoping that it is nothing more than bad timing!

Have you been using OPK's? If not, like the PP said, your timing may be off.

I recently went to the gyn who also specializes in infertility. He took blood to check my hormone levels. He also is sending me to take a hysterosalpingogram and for DH to get his sperm analyzed. I go back to him next month to get the results and discuss it further.

Re: a year and no luck - what next?

I was 32 when I started to try to get pregnant. I will be 34 tomorrow, and still not pregnant. Knowing now what I know, I strongly encourge women to see a RE after 9 months of trying. By the time tests and the results come back in, and a gameplan is in place, it takes forever.
My husband and I are in the 30% unexplained infertilty couples. On paper we look great- his sperm is above average, my blood, ovaries egg quality is great, its just that we are unexplained. Honestly, RE and obgyns will give you the stats when you see them. Get educated and arm yourself with good information. Good luck!

I agree with above. Your Ob/Gyn should give you some names. She/he can probably do some preliminary testing... but you do need to get to a reproductive endocrinologist.

And, yes, DH will be tested too.

IMO, it's not a bad idea to go to the RE and get all your testing and medical records in one place (makes things easier).

In the beginning, you do CD 3 bloodwork and a vaginal ultrasound. DH gets sperm analyzed. They take it from there.

I just used opks' for the first time this month. If it was correct this month I think I was somewhat on the right track with predicting my O. But I know that some months I was off for sure.

I already made an appt with my regular OBGYN and if she sees a need I will go to an RE, but I am not going to assume the worst yet.

Thanks for all of the reccomendations.

If is not too personal, can I ask what they are telling you to do if it is unexplained?

Re: a year and no luck - what next?

Well, it was exactly at month 9(Jan) we went to NSUH. During the initial visit the Dr did an ultrasound and was able to tell me that I ovualated, then it was Feb when I had bloodwork done and a HSG done and it was discovered that I had my left fallp tube blocked. Also my husband had a SA done- above average. SO, the Dr suggest I have the tube sugically removed, that lap surgy was done in April- when the Dr performed the lap it was discovered in fact the tube was not blocked!! The Dr siad again, NOTHING is wrong and April 2009, was a month away from being one year, so he didn't act too concerned, after the lap in April he was convinced that after 3 months I would be pregnant, well I was not after 3 months, so I went back in July and options were discussed and my husband and I decided IUI w/ injectables- first round in August 2009- BUST, Sept I took the month off- IUI is not done in back to back, you take a month off in between. October will be IUI #2. The Dr gave me alot of positive feed abck w/ the injectables- multiple follies and great sized!! However, again, on paper we look GREAT and the is no indictation why we cannot get pregnant: I always ovualate on my own, my periods are fairly regular, my bloodwork comes back great, my health is tip top, as well as my husband.
This entire experience has taught me that it's on Gods watch- not mine.
Please feel free to ask me anything else. I would highly recommend NSUH.

Re: a year and no luck - what next?

I had a miscarriage almost 2 years ago - and we started trying again 9 months ago & nothing. I skipped seeing my OBGYN & went to see an RE instead.

I have done a round of Clomid & have been BBT for the past 3 weeks. DH goes in this afternoon for SA.

As of YET no eggs - not even close were the words of my RE on Mon. I go back on Fri just to see if I ovulated but he highly doubts it.

I recommend seeing a RE if you haven't already. Its frustrating & there are all these tests that need to be done on both you & DH.

You really should use OPKs.
You'd be surprised about timing.

With unexplained infertility you run the whole course... lots of testing (this is how they determine it is unexplained vs low sperm count, blocked tubes, ect). Then, IUIs, eventually IVFs.
