The house I am buying has a fireplace. Does it really do that good a job of heating the house?

I would imagine it doesn't do much to heat the bedrooms though. But I guess it does a good job of the livingroom.

The TRUTH of the matter is the fireplace is an energy zapper! It actually $ucks the warm air OUT of your house.

(I have been told this so many times...didn't believe it but I actually saw something about this on TV this am -the LESS you use your fireplace the more energy efficient your house is)

How long does that oil last you?

My con ed (gas and electric) bills last year were about $500 a month! This year I have to say I think they will be way more..especially becuase last winter we were never home and turned the heat down during the day - now with a baby here Chat Icon oy I'm sure it's going to be insane!

Fireplace ***** the hot air out, although if you sit DIRECTLY in front of it you feel the heat -- but the rest of the heat in the house gets sapped.

We have a coal-burning stove and that thing heats up the whole house ...we light it in the evening and it is still warm the next morning!! And our house is 5 floors - the stove is in the sub-basement and our bedroom on the top floor is still toasty in the morning...

OMG too funny -- the ***** is for S U C K S

We're installing a fireplace in the LR ...our fuel costs weren't too bad because we're locked in at $1.94/gallon.

Ive heard that too that the fireplace ***** out the warm air in the house, but only upstairs gets really cool but the entire first level stays warm and toasty with the fireplace on, so I will be using it for sure!

Re: AAAAHHHH- my oil bill came yesterday.....

We actually can't really put in a fireplace, I just don't know what we're going to do this winter. I locked in at $1 something last year and when I got my bill and called them, they said they can't honor those prices anymore because of everything that's going on. Last year they would come about once every two months- and the tank usually had some oil in it, but this is absolutely unbelievable. The whole situation in general! I feel like something really needs to be done about all this. Isn't there oil in storage somewhere in America? Now they're talking about gas going up to $5.00- come on now! How are people going to survive?

Sorry, don't mean to turn this into a vent, I'm just watching the news (mistake) and I just don't know how people are going to deal.

We have a gas fireplace and it blows the hot air into our Family Room. In a matter of 15 minutes, half the downstairs is warmed up.

Re: AAAAHHHH- my oil bill came yesterday.....

We had a fireplace in our 1st house and it was not very energy efficient. You can buy a wood burning stove insert, which is much more efficient but the are costly. We currently have a woodburning stove in our familyroom, but we have yet to use it. My neighbors said the previous owner would heat the entire house just by the stove, we shall see if that was true this year..... DH, just ordered a cord of wood so we can be ready once it gets cold..

Btw: For all of those who have locked in with oil prices check your contract, many of the "lock-in" prices exclude acts of god such as hurricanesChat Icon As previsously mentioned, this is going to be a very rough winter for many Americans with the current price of gas and now the home heating is also going to see similar increases wether it's gas or oil. Crazy!

I lived in a levitt house growning up and you may not feel the fire place downstairs but the upstairs bedrooms get nice and toasty especially the room on the right (going up the stairs) since the chimny is in there. I we would lower the heat all the way upstairs when the fire place was on.
