I also never thought A&F was supposed to be cool. I admit I wore a lot of A&F clothing in college in Boston. It was more collegiate than cool.
Several of my friends who went to college in Manhattan dressed a lot more cool. I was always more the Plain Jane.

I can't walk into that store anyway, because of the perfume and the music. My niece shops there and just going in to get her a gift certificate was torture on my senses.
The owner looks sort of like that plastic surgery wife who was in the news a lot about 10 years ago.

I can't believe someone who looks like him would be so judgemental of others' looks. He looks like he has acromegaly to me and like he's had extensive plastic surgery.
Bottom line, he can say and feel whatever he wants. The only way to get him back is to NOT buy their products.

I don't want to downplay how awful this is, but this isn't new. I don't even think this article is new.. someone on my FB feed posted it yesterday but I read about this a LONG time ago. Maybe even 10 years ago. Complete with one of those busted pics of the CEO.
yeah..that too.. this is so old. and he's not alone I think tommy Hilfinger said something similar by about ethnic types instead.
Ironically we still by tommy stuff LOL hey.. he may not mean for someone like me to wear it but its my money and I'll wear what I want.
Don't get me wrong - I haven't shopped there in years, not since I read the article all those years ago. I won't for myself and I won't buy for my teenage SIL's or my niece who certainly are his target market.
I do care that this self-loathing asshole thinks it's okay to cater to the so-called "cool" kids by blatantly discriminating against the rest. That is not okay with me and as a consequence, he won't get my money.

A&F is not the only company that feels this way. A large majority of high end brands also purposefully cut their clothes small and do not make sizes over 12. They just do not advertise it.

My stepdaughters and I have clothes from them. I'm almost 40 so I don't really think its my style anymore although I do like their stuff.
Sad as it sounds, I can see my stepdaughters feeling very flattered by reading these statements. I think while some people will boycott this place, all the kids who would give up an internal organ to be lumped in the category of "hot" and "popular" will be flocking to these stores like the sheep that they are.
I agree.
The reality is, A&F is marketing to teenagers; for the most part they're not thinking past "what's cool, hip or popular" and lord knows they're not really considering anything beyond themselves.
The company is marketing to the mindset and yes, in this day and age (as it was when WE were teens) it's all about what you wear and the labels associated with it. All this guy did by making these statements is solidify, in his target market's mind "that wearing A&F will make you cool" and that, for the most part is what kids are worrying about. Fitting in, being cool.
This is nothing new and it's not just with clothing.
Have you guys been to a high school lately? Do you see what they wear, the phones they carry and the cars they drive?
If parents really didn't give a shit about their kids "popularity" they wouldn't drop fortunes on clothing and gadgets. I don't know a teen who doesn't have an iPhone, iPod and/or iPad, who wears A&F, Holister, American Eagle, etc.
So not to be mean but to hear everyone say "oh that's horrible, I'll NEVER let my kid wear this", well, all I'll say to that is speak to me when you have a 13 year old who is desperately trying to fit in and the way to do it is, in part, by what you wear.
That's reality.

Re: Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Explains Why He Hates Fat Chicks
I think his statements were intended to have this kind of result.
He’s now just told the world that ONLY THE HOTTEST people can wear A&F. As adults we sit here and roll our eyes and demonize him.. but we aren’t his target. His target is the insecure 10th grader with braces and glasses.. but long, thin legs. She just got told that she is HOT if she can fit into A&F. His target are the as yet un-evolved teenaged boys who are lapping up the idea that they can identify a hot girl by the label she wears. His target is the college freshman who is so desperate to fit in that she’s letting guys do body shots off of her on a Tuesday instead of studying for her Psych exam. Sure.. there are a ton of self-aware kids who will look at that message and say “GMAFB!” BUT there are just as many who are eager to find an easy way to prove their social worth. There are just as many who are craving acceptance at any cost. And there are all manner of azzhole kids who will use this as a tool to torture. “I bet Amy can’t wear A&F.. she’s got that giant butt..”
And we – as parents and adults with purchasing power – like to think that we can make a dent in the sales by refusing to buy our kids A&F sweatshirts or jeans. But I am worried that for every one of ‘us’ there is another adult who just heard “My daughter will be popular if I buy her A&F.” And they exist.. the moms who allow their 16 year olds to have lipo and boob jobs, the dads who insist that their sons are only worthwhile if they are great at football. We like to think they are few and far between.. but they aren’t all that rare.
Personally I have not gotten a thing in A&F for my kids in a long while. Overpriced for the quality and limited in selection. Personally I will probably NEVER buy from the store for ANYONE in my family because I don’t like to fall victim to marketing ploys like this. I hope I raise my boys well enough that they are part of the group that recognizes this kind of stuff as the stinky bullsh*t it is and that they will not waste their money on A&F.
I dunno.. I hope I’m wrong. I hope that MOST people are smart enough to recognize this tactic and avoid A&F and avoid lining the pockets of someone who would spout such nonsensical crap. I guess I just don’t have much faith in most people though…
It's not new.. Dov Charney is often cited by employees and former employees as a sexist pig.. but his brand isn't in any danger..

Absolutely.
My SD has not been materialistic at all but that is changing rapidly. She wants to fit in and, in her mind, how she dresses determines that. And guess what? As a parent, you want them to feel like they fit in and to fit in. She maintains her individuality in her activities and by her own persona, but she wants to dress just like everyone else does. If a hoodie from A&F or Hollister is what makes her feel confident and good about herself and gets her through this very awkward age, so be it. It's just an uncomfortable truth. Nobody wants to support someone like this CEO but when it comes to your kids and making them happy, the obnoxious commentary made by this guy becomes irrelevant.

I hear you, I work with teenagers, I get it and I am sure I will do what I can to ensure my son 'fits in' but there are lots of brands and honestly knowing this (and I have heard this for years about this brand) I will never shop there, there are plenty of cool clothing stores that dont discriminate.

Wow- way to promote bullying in school and cliques. Only the good looking kids are cool Only the good looking kids are popular. Eveyone else is an outcast. This guy is a shallow, superficial asshole and exactly what is wrong with this country. I wonder what HE looks like? Is he a GQ model? Is HE allowed to wear those clothes?
He looks like someone who has had way to much bad plastic surgery!

Re: Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Explains Why He Hates Fat Chicks
AN OPEN LETTER TO MR. MIKE JEFFRIES, CEO ABERCROMBIE + FITCH
Dear Mr. Jeffries,
Hi there. It’s me, Amy. We’ve never met, but since it seems we won’t be sitting at the same lunch table (or crossing paths in your stores) anytime soon, I thought it was important that you get to know me if you’re going to hate me. I’m one of the two out of three Americans you can’t stand and don’t want in your stores. I’m your neighbor. Your doctor. The young woman working behind the hotel check-in desk. I’m your child’s third grade teacher. Your sister’s best friend. I’m the veterinarian who saved your dog’s life…twice. And the lady sitting next to you on the flight to Los Angeles. I’m the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. I’m the housewife with one heck of an expendable income. I’m the 13-year-old teetering on the verge of an eating disorder. And the 22-year-old battling depression and low self-esteem. I’m the employee working in your office, living in fear that two pounds are the difference between my paycheck and the unemployment line. I’m the American Woman…and I’ve got something to say to you.
Mike (can I call you Mike?), I’m not only a fat chick, I’m also a “not-so-cool” kid. Always have been, always will be. I’ve had 31.5 years to come to terms with that. Along the way I have been bullied, tortured, teased and harassed. Somehow I came out the other end better for it. In case you haven’t noticed, those not-so-cool kids are the ones who are passing people like you by–and doing some pretty amazing things. (You can read about a couple of them here and here and here.) Funny thing about wearing your struggle on the outside: it makes you stronger. It teaches you how to adapt. It forces you to dig deep and do more. And while people like you are sitting at the cool kids table intent on holding others down, the ragtag team of not-so-cool kids is busy pulling others up…and we’ve become an unstoppable force driving the world forward.
You got me, Mike! I don’t wear a size 4. You should probably also know that my middle fingers curve ever-so-slightly outward and I have a Morton’s toe. I’m terrible at long division and I’m not that great at parallel parking. But I’m a good person. I have an awesome job, great friends and a family that I wouldn’t trade for the world. I have mentors with brains as big as their giant hearts, and a rescue dog who is always happy to see me at the end of the day. Like everyone (size 4 or size 24), I have wants and hopes and dreams. I dream of writing a children’s book and inheriting a large sum of money so I can open a rescue retirement home for all the old shelter dogs that nobody wants. I’d like to pay for the person behind me at the toll booth sometime, and it’d be nice to get around to taking the “Great American Road Trip” one day. Overall I’m a pretty happy person. I’m a loyal friend and I strive to make the world better whenever and however I can. I love my community and I’m proud to call Columbus home. Although Abercrombie is headquartered here, you don’t represent the voice or the spirit of the place I know and love. When people think of this city, it is my hope they’ll choose to forget your name and instead think of people like Jeni Britton Bauer and Christian Long and Liz Lessner; doers and thinkers giving Columbus (and humankind) a good name.
As a marketer, I understand where you’re coming from on some level, Mike. I really do. When you say “a lot of people don’t belong in our clothes–they can’t belong,” I get it. For consumers, every purchase is a declaration. With each dollar a consumer spends, they are saying, “I am part of this brand and this brand is a part of me. I believe what this brand believes. I support what this brand supports.” As I sit here wrapping up this letter, I am proud to say that I may be a not-so-cool kid and the extra pounds I carry may not be a thing of beauty, but I am nothing like you or your brand–and that, Mr. Jeffries, is a beautiful thing.
Sincerely, Amy Taylor

I'm fairly small (size 4)...and even I can't wear their clothes, not that I'd ever want to. Their pants are made for girls with no ass. The rise in their pants is WAY too low and anyone with any kind of ass will have instant plumbers crack. No thank you!

This guy is ridiculous. I agree that certain body types aren't always flattered by their clothing...but lets be honest...the majority of their clothes are sweats, jeans and tshirts. All things that my fat ass could manage to make look good.
The fact that someones mommy or daddy shelled out $50 for a sweatshirt is what makes that kid "cool" in school?
Long live chunky girls. I'd rather be fat than be this guys target audience.

Yes. To a pre-teen and teenager, it really does. Wearing your Kohl's best just ain't gonna cut it. Because remember, you're dealing with personalities and minds that aren't fully developed and what they deem important just isn't, but that's who this guy is marketing. He's not selling to the parents, he's selling to KIDS and they're parents are buying them this stuff.

This statement is MUCH easier said as a grown adult, with a lot more self confidence than a pre-teen or teenaged girl or boy. It is VERY rare to find a kid who doesn't want to fit in and is ok with being the "fat kid".

It always has been.. I remember as far back as 5th grade being made fun of because my mom wouldn't let me where what was "cool". Either she didn't like it or couldn't afford it, but the other kids definitely made comments.

The fact that someones mommy or daddy shelled out $50 for a sweatshirt is what makes that kid "cool" in school?
It always has been.. I remember as far back as 5th grade being made fun of because my mom wouldn't let me where what was "cool". Either she didn't like it or couldn't afford it, but the other kids definitely made comments.
my mom picked out my clothes for picture day up until like the 5th grade...it was AWFUL! once she made me wear highwater corduroys and a turtleneck with a letterman sweater and penny loafers. I shit you not. I was MORTIFIED! I made sure i was the first kid to get into the lunch room and sit and the last to leave and I refused to get up for any reason lest someone see my awful outfit! Let's not even get into the madonna years...the side pony wrapped in lace and layered dangling pearl necklaces
growing up i didn't really care about name brands except when it came to sneakers. The only thing that concerned me was when my dad bought me a full on FUBU outfit and i actually cried bc it was not my style AT ALL. they were flared tight fitting jeans and a nice baby blue and white sweater...it wasn't ugly and i actually got alot of compliments...but it was not me! I was a little raver / metalhead and I felt like my clothes had to "represent my personality" at that time in my life.
now clothes are just clothes for the most part.
